Resumen: La pregunta por la representación de las ciudades -y, de manera más amplia, del espacio urbano-ha sido una constante en la crítica literaria en las últimas décadas, con especial impacto en el análisis de discursos coloniales. En este marco, buena parte de la crítica ha atendido de manera privilegiada a crónicas de tradición occidental, en las cuales prima la representación del espacio en términos de extrañeza y maravilla, como Otro con el cual vincularse desde la apropiación. Distinto es el caso de las crónicas de tradición indígena y las crónicas mestizas, en las cuales el espacio urbano estructura buena parte de la trama narrativa a partir de modos de representación que entrecruzan tradiciones y usos del pasado. En este trabajo analizo, de manera comparativa, las representaciones de dos ciudades paradigmáticas (Cuzco y Tezcoco), en las crónicas del Inca Garcilaso de la Vega (sus Comentarios Reales) y Fernando de Alva Ixtlilxóchitl (la Historia de la nación chichimeca). Dando cuenta de los tropos privilegiados y las modulaciones retóricas en la representación del espacio, mostraré de qué manera las ciudades inscriptas en la escritura funcionan como centro a partir del cual se reconstruye una memoria, se hace inteligible la ruina y se reconfigura el trauma. Las ciudades invisibles Desde hace más de dos décadas, diversas aproximaciones críticas coinciden en poner en cuestión las tipologías más usuales respecto de las crónicas de Indias, confiriéndole un lugar destacado a las denominadas "crónicas mestizas". Uno de los primeros en delimitarlas de ese modo fue Martin Lienhard, quien las definió como: "aquellas crónicas que, casi independientemente del origen étnico de sus autores (indígenas, mestizos, españoles), reelaboran materiales discursivos o reales de la historia americana, a través de unos procedimientos narrativos, verbales y pictográficos, de tradición heterogénea, indígena y europea" (3). Cuatro años después, en un análisis que también las incluye (en especial a las obras de Fernando de Alva Ixtlilxóchitl), Rolena Adorno (55) adoptó una perspectiva semejante a la hora de caracterizar al sujeto colonial en términos de focalización. En la década siguiente, Catherine Poupeney-Hart (279) revisó estas definiciones y retomó las connotaciones de complejidad y contradicción que conlleva el término "mestizo", así como las distintas dimensiones textuales a las que remite: la sintáctica, la semántica, la pragmática. Poupeney-Hart concluye que estas crónicas "se revelan [como] auténticas manifestaciones de resistencia, escritura para el futuro" (281). Esta tensión entre resistencia, contradicción, pasado y futuro define buena parte de las aproximaciones crítico-literarias a las crónicas mestizas, que tienden a ver en ellas la puesta en escena de un proyecto utópico, cuya funcionalidad textual y pragmática radica en la posibilidad de suturar el "trauma de la conquista" entendido como huella y ausencia, pero también como presencia de lo indecible.En cual...
Este trabajo aborda el relato del viaje a las Hibueras que Bernal Díaz del Castillo presenta en su Historia verdadera de la conquista de la Nueva España entendiéndolo como texto cuya indefinición genérica cruza la memoria, la autobiografía, el viaje, la autofiguración. Leemos entonces las estrategias escriturarias por las cuales el relato de este desplazamiento redefine las variables y dinámicas de la exploración, la conquista y la aprehensión de sujetos y espacios otros.
Preguntas y disputas en torno al archivo literario latinoamericano han estado en el centro de los debates en las últimas décadas. Su configuración, su materialidad, sus textos fundantes han sido objeto de polémicas y de intervenciones críticas de diversa índole. En este marco, los orígenes del archivo, renovados por la articulación entre picaresca, discurso legal y narrativa que propuso Roberto González Echevarría en su señero Mito y archivo. Una teoría de la narrativa latinoamericana ([1990] 2000), han recibido atención de aproximaciones críticas diacrónicas en torno a los problemas del corpus, el canon y la configuración de la literatura latinoamericana. De allí que esta vuelta crítica exigiera un nuevo recorrido por orígenes y bordes de esa amplísima categoría conocida por el genérico "crónicas de Indias". Desde la década de 1980 -celebraciones/remembranzas del Quinto Centenario del "Descubrimiento" de América de por medio-, han visto la luz numerosas colecciones y ediciones que reeditaban y ajustaban textos canónicos, o volvían a visitar otros, mal editados u olvidados, vinculados tanto con los bordes del imperio español como con los bordes (materiales y metafóricos) de ese archivo que vuelve posible la literatura contemporánea. El trabajo fue (es) ingente, y aún queda mucho por hacer en la medida en que buena parte de esta documentación se encuentra expoliada, perdida, repartida en bibliotecas europeas o norteamericanas; en cualquier caso, lejana o sesgada para el estudioso y el lego.
