Irritable bowel syndrome is the most common disorder of gut-brain interaction affecting between 4 to 10% of the global population. 1 The cardinal clinical features include cyclic abdominal pain associated with change in bowel habits. The pathophysiology of IBS is not well understood and is postulated to represent an intricate relationship between low-grade inflammation, altered gut microbiota, impaired mucosal barrier, and visceral hypersensitivity.
