In general, therefore, it may be that minor trauma, causing increase in vascular permeability, is a localizing factor, not only in relation to skin lesions, but possibly in relation to joint lesions also. Eighteen artificial joints replacing the natural metatarsophalangeal joints in a series of dogs were observed for periods of up to 6 months. All joints were assessed by function, serial radiography, naked eye dissection post mortem, and histological changes in bone.
