Las negociaciones para un nuevo TLCAN han puesto el foco de atención en la industria automotriz mexicana (IAM). Con una participación cada vez mayor en los mercados, empleos e inversiones de cartera en la región y al dar cuenta del 90% del déficit comercial de E.U. con México, la IAM es una pieza clave para la conformación de un nuevo TLCAN. El presidente Trump ha hecho de la IAM el blanco de sus críticas, pues la considera el mejor ejemplo de un tratado mal instrumentado por E.U. De ahí que sea oportuno buscar nuevas explicaciones sobre las bases de la ventaja competitiva de la IAM. Este estudio se fundamenta en teorías del ciclo de negocios e inversiones y en conceptos de anclaje de mercado e institucional para evaluar las condiciones de competitividad de la IAM bajo el TLCAN. Su propuesta es que la IAM ha funcionado bajo políticas de dumping social, por lo que su posición en los mercados regionales y globales se basa en fuentes no legítimas de ventaja comparativa.
