End-stage cancer patients present many oral manifestations that need the support of a dentist, who included in the multidisciplinary team, must make the necessary adjustments in order to maintain the quality of life of these patients relieving their pain and suffering. Based on a literature review, the research searched articles published between June 2000 and February 2019, in the following databases: Pubmed, Scielo, Lilacs, Wiley Online Libary. The following inclusion criteria was used: articles published in Portuguese or English which included the keywords: dental care, critical care, palliative care, terminally ill. The aim of this paper is to present the importance of dental care to patients with cancer in palliative care. In conclusion, it was possible to verify that Dentistry in the hospital environment is of paramount importance, and should be based on empathy and communication, seeking to create the necessary bonds for the development of an effective and individualized treatment plan, discussion of cases in an integrated way and demonstrating the importance of higher education institutions in the training of future professionals. This paper aims to be contributory in order to increase the discussion about palliative care in Dentistry, besides providing subsidies to future studies that will deepen in this essential and still unexplored subject.
The TMJ has been to the Dental community a key point in the search of knowledge, being it part of the temporomandibular joint complex and of the estomatognathic system which are in charge of the mastication, speech, swallowing, as well as participation in breathing and taste perception. For the majority of the women in serious state of depression, which do not respond psychotherapeutic treatment, pharmacological treatment it's applied. The antidepressants serotonin selective reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) are the most recommended in these cases. The teratogenic effect of the SSRIs is considered controversial, studies done with women who used these drugs during the pregnancy showed that the respiratory and central nervous systems are the most affected, was also recorded a deficit of body growth and the decrease of the encephalon and skull measures. In the present study, our goal was to assess whether the administration of Fluoxetine during the pregnancy modified the embryology and morphology of the TMJ of rats. For that, 16 Wistar female rats from the Nutrition Department of the UFPE vivarium were selected; 8 for the control group, which received daily 0.9% of saline in subcutaneous dose of 10ml/g, with schedules previously established after daily weighing and 8 for the experimental one that were treated with fluoxetine hydrochloride with the dose of 10mg/Kg in a volume 10ml/g of weight, were injected subcutaneously with the same standards established for the control group. It was observed, with this dose that the embryological development of the TMJ, especially of the mandibular condyle, does not present any difference between the degree of maturation of the tissue that forms the TMJ, especially of the condyle between the treated and control groups.
Introduction: Medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ) corresponds to an adverse effect of the use of drugs such as bisphosphonates and denosumab. This condition is often associated with pain, infection, purulent secretion, paraesthesia, tooth mobility and halitosis, decreasing the patient’s quality of life. The management of MRONJ tends to be conservative, through the guidance of oral hygiene, antibiotic therapy and mouthwashes. However, the use of antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) has shown promise in the treatment of these injuries. The purpose of this article is to report a case of MRONJ treatment associated with aPDT. Case Report: A 75-year-old patient, with a history of breast cancer and use of intravenous Zoledronic Acid, presented with bilateral MRONJ lesions in tuberosity on the right and left sides. Treatment was conservatively instituted with the use of aPDT as an adjuvant. After 12 aPDT sessions, complete regression of the lesion was observed. However, after two weeks, the presence of a new lesion was noted, this time in the anterior region of the maxilla. The same protocol previously established was followed and after two aPDT sessions, the patient returned with complete lesion regression. Conclusion: The use of aPDT may represent an important adjuvant within a set of clinical protocols in the treatment of MRONJ.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
