Sponge communities of the upper rivers Parana (Goias) and Paraguai (Mato Grosso), Brazil, with redescription of Ollcosciera schllbarti (Bonetto & Ezcurra de Drago). An extensive survey for freshwater sponges was carried at the temporarely exposed rocky bottoms of river Corumba at Goias State and river Manso at Mato Grosso State. The exposure resulted from the closing of the dams for lake formation at the respective Hidreletric Power Plants. Drulia uruguayensis Bonetto & Ezcurra de Drago, 1968, Corvospongil/a seckti Bonetto & Ezcurra de Drago, 1966 and Troclwspoflgil/a repens (Hinde, 1888) were seen to be common to both rivers. EUllapiusjragilis (Leidy, 1851), Oncosc/era navicella (Carter, 1881) and 0. petricola (Bonetto & Ezcurra de Drago, 1969) were yet found in river Manso and O. schubarti (Bonetto & Ezcurra de Drago, 1967) in river Corumba. O. schubarti is redescribed and SEM illustrated. KEY WORDS. Sponges, Ollcosciera sc/zubarti, Neotropical, river, benthic assemblages,
AbstractDue to a suspected human case of Brazilian Lyme-like disease in the city of Goiatins, Tocantins State, an epidemiological survey was carried out in eight counties in this region during September 2007 and February 2008, where 1,890 ticks were collected from domestic animals and from the environment. A total of eight tick species were identified: Rhipicephalus sanguineus, Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus, Dermacentor nitens, Amblyomma cajennense, Amblyomma oblongoguttatum, Amblyomma ovale, Amblyomma parvum and Amblyomma tigrinum. The last four species were described for the first time in this region. Although human parasitism by ticks is frequently described in Goiatins, no ticks collected from humans were analyzed. The study of ixodids in this region contributes with the survey of Brazilian ticks, as well as the elucidation of the possible transmission of the agent that caused the Brazilian Lyme-like disease case in Goiatins.
In October 2009, our laboratory was contacted by a Brazilian Public Health organization regarding a severe community outbreak of an acute exanthematic and febrile disease in the Brazilian Amazon that primarily affected children. A total of 44 patients with febrile disease were identified by the local public health system, 37 of whom were children between 1 and 9 years of age. Molecular virological and phylogenetic characterization revealed that enterovirus B was the etiological agent of this outbreak, which was characterized by a clinical presentation known as herpangina.
A foresia ocorre como estratégia adaptativa entre os invertebrados, sendo adotada por diferentes táxons. Entre os insetos aquáticos esta relação é uma associação comensal, em geral, entre larvas de algumas espécies, neste caso particularmente de dípteros, que constroem casulos e vivem sobre o exoesqueleto de insetos maiores como Ephemeroptera, Megaloptera, Plecoptera, Odonata e Trichoptera e por eles são transportados.Dentre os dípteros, os Chironomidae são, sem dúvida, o grupo mais reportado em associação forética com diferentes gê-neros e espécies relacionando-se com: Diptera (STEFFAN 1967a);
Freshwater sponge spicules could be potential new etiological agents of ocular pathology, but further studies are needed, considering the heterogeneity of the ocular lesions and results of serological and environmental studies.
