Indonesia traditional market was one of the main economic centres in the past, where farmers, fishermen, gardener, and those whose products were connected to the natural resources could sell their products and consumers could buy them with much cheaper prices. Now, with the rise of small scale supermarkets, online shopping, door-to-door sellers, and more modern marketplace, the traditional markets are threatened to lose their customers. There are also the degrading images of traditional market in the society that further discourage consumers to visit the marketplace. Salaman traditional market is one of the traditional markets that is being affected by these changes, and has begun to lose its customers. With the size of the marketplace’s site, the location, and the economic importance it holds for its suppliers, Salaman District will face a major economic and urban problem if Salaman Traditional Marketplace is to be closed. The government has begun to take notice of the problem by trying to modernize the marketplace, but without careful analysis and full consideration of the main problems, Indonesia might lose one of its unique historic building typologies. This research wishes to evaluate the main reasons on why Salaman market is in the downwind, and using empirical study and primary data collection backed by literature and historic study, this research will try to pinpoint the problems in order to have the best approach to revitalize the marketplace. The steps that is being suggested in the Salaman traditional marketplace can become a precedent for other traditional marketplaces in Indonesia that are facing similar problems, and how the marketplace can still become a cultural and economic centre for the people that surround it.
Abstract_ The arrival of the Dutch to Indonesia was one of the factors that influence the diversity of Indonesian building styles. Dutch East Indies architecture entered Indonesia before World War II and was pioneered especially by Thomas Karsten and Henri Mecalien Pont. Thomas Karsten always pays attention to local culture and climate, the principles of contextual architecture. Contextual architecture strives to contribute to its surroundings by aligning the new building, by not forgetting the environment context where the building is built, especially the locality value. This study aims to learn Thomas Karsten's work on contextual design and is expected to be applied in real terms. Qualitative research method is used by doing a literature review to find keywords to be analyzed regarding contextual architecture. The objects analyzed are Thomas Karsten’s work, Sobokartti People's Theater Building, Gede Market Solo, and Jiwasraya Building Semarang. The analyzed aspects are the relationship of the building with the surroundings, the physical aspect, the non-physical aspect, and the contrast/harmonious trait. From the three buildings, there are similarities from the contextual design: (1) the mixture of Dutch and Javanese architecture, (2) local cultural values that are applied, (3) harmonious traits, and (4) building adjustments to local climate. Keywords : Contextual Architecture; Thomas Karsten.
the rapid advancement of technology in the field of industry is changing the construction world, and it comes in different forms, one of which is digital fabrication technology. As the technology of fabrication process that is aided by computer, such as 3d printing and CNC machines, becoming more affordable and more user friendly, they are slowly becoming a core component in the construction process in the future, as the result has a guarantee in precision and speed, even for a complex structure or geometry. The base material in this fabrication type has also varied greatly over time, and some of the base materials have the capabilities to withheld heavy load, rendering it perfect for construction. The technology also allows the creation of precise prototypes and scale models that can help the design process. In this golden age of internet and computer-aided design, the user-friendly factor of digital fabrication means that the technology can be used by all sorts of people, even those who have limited knowledge in structure, design, and development, making it a universal tool of development. Such numerous advantages will eventually affect the construction world, whether in the design process, the cost, the timeframe, and more importantly, the workforce, the people whose job can be reduced or even fully replaced by the digital fabrication technology. By using qualitative and descriptive analysis, and combined by the literature study approach, this research wishes to evaluate the effects of digital fabrication in Indonesia's current construction world, and how it will affect the country's construction world soon. As of now, the digital fabrication is still being used scarcely in the construction world in Indonesia, due to the price and due to the limited knowledge of it by those who worked in the construction world. By knowing and defining the potentials, the threats, and the effects of using digital fabrication as a core component in the construction process, this paper can become an introduction on how the construction world, the society, and the government should act correctly towards digital fabrication, as it is a major element in the fourth industrial revolution.
Artificial Intelligence continues to develop rapidly and provokes people to think about Artificial consciousness. Anthropocentric understanding considers consciousness a unique feature of human beings not possessed by other living beings. However, software and hardware development demonstrated the ability to process, analyze, and infer increasingly comprehensive data close to the image of human brain performance. Furthermore, the application of artificial Intelligence to human-friendly objects that can communicate with humans evokes the presence of consciousness within these objects. This paper discusses the presence of artificial consciousness in humanoid robots as an evolutionary continuation of artificial Intelligence. It estimates its implications for architecture, primarily within interior design. Consciousness has a special place in architecture, as it guides Intelligence in engineering and brings it to an abstract level, such as aesthetics. This paper extracts popular information from Internet conversations and theories in pre-existing scientific journals. This paper concludes that the adaptability of both parties and the balance of positions between the two parties in the future will influence the development of interior design approaches that will integrate artificial Intelligence and humans.
Starting from the past decade, Indonesia is growing rapidly in the construction of infrastructures that are being fully supported by the government in order to reach the goal of becoming one of the leading countries in the future. Such development created the construction ripple phenomenon that was instigated by the private sector to fill the construction voids left by the rapid development of infrastructure, and it pressurizes cities to grow or change in order to coup with the infrastructure advancements. This phenomenon has affected the cities in Indonesia, even those that are not considered as the planned centers of developments, such as Yogyakarta. Yogyakarta is experiencing the effects of the ripple in the form of the rising number of generic buildings that are spreading fast around the city. This will, in turn, dictate the future of Yogyakarta’s ever-evolving Genius Loci. This research will see how much the construction ripple phenomenon has affected the city of Yogyakarta by conducting surveys on the generic buildings that have been built or in the planning stage of construction. A thorough analysis will be then made, also by conducting literature studies, to conclude the ways and steps to try maintaining Yogyakarta’s unique characteristic as a city in the ever-growing pressure of economic modernization that is currently spreading throughout Indonesia. If these steps are being done correctly, then Yogyakarta can become one of the examples of how cities in Indonesia coup with the construction ripple phenomenon without can losing its unique urban characteristics.
