Mean (±SD) STT1 was 3.4 ± 3.6 mm/min (95% confidence interval of 2.01-4.78 mm/min), intraocular pressure (IOP) was 12.9 ± 6.2 mmHg, NMIFT was 6.0 ± 3.5, EAPPTT was 17.1 ± 2.5 mm/min, PFL was 28.9 ± 3.0 mm, anterior chamber depth was 3.1 ± 0.3 mm, lens axial length was 8.4 ± 0.6 mm, vitreous chamber depth was 7.9 ± 0.7 mm and axial globe length was 19.9 ± 1.3 mm. For all animals evaluated, Bacillus sp., Diphteroids and Staphylococcus sp. were predominant.
We report three cases of stings by Africanized bees in cattle in the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Erythema, subcutaneous edema, necrosis accompanied by skin detachment, and subsequent skin regeneration were observed, especially on the head and dewlap. Histopathological examinations performed 45 days later revealed complete skin reepithelialization with moderate dermal fibrosis. The clinical picture and differential diagnosis are discussed in the present manuscript, with a focus on photosensitization, which causes cutaneous lesions on the head (sequela) with cicatricial curving of the ears and can be very similar to what is observed in cattle attacked by swarms of bees. The distinction between photosensitization and bee sting lesions can be made with a focus on history and clinical and pathological aspects.
Pesq. Vet. Bras. 31(11):938-952, novembro 2011 938 Efeito protetor da acetamida sobre as intoxicações experimentais em ratos por monoϐluoroacetato de sódio e por algumas plantas brasileiras que causam morte súbita 1 Amorimia (Mascagnia) exotropica and M. aff. rigida) was studied using rats. Additionally the clinical and pathological picture of the poisoning was described. In these experiments 33 Wistar rats (Rattus norvegicus albinus) were used. Nine rats ate spontaneously the fresh leaves of P. marcgravii at amounts of 2.0 and 4.0g/kg. Two of the rats received orally single doses of acetamide (2.0 and 4.0g/kg) one minute before the plant was supplied. A third rat received 4.0g/kg of acetamide after consumption of 4.0g/kg of the plant and showed severe symptoms of poisoning. In the experiments with MF, doses of 4.0 and 8.0mg/kg were administered to four rats. The interval between the administration of either acetamide and concentrated plant extracts or MF ranged from 2 to 4 hours; the dose of acetamide ranged from 2.0 to 8.0g/ kg. In the experiments with concentrated extracts of eight BSDCP, 20 rats were orally poisoned with single or repeated doses. Acetamide, when previously administered, prevented the appearance of clinical signs and death in all of the rats poisoned by MF, as well as of the ones poisoned by fresh P. marcgravii leaves and by the concentrated extracts of each of the other BSDCP. These rats were re-subjected to the same experimental protocol, yet without the administration of acetamide. In these experiments, all of the rats evidenced clinical signs and death (except M. aff. rigida). All of the rats showed mild to markedly engorged atria, and sometimes also of the cranial and caudal vena cava. In three of the rats, there was a moderate right and left cardiac dilatation. The liver of all rats was slightly or markedly congested, with lobular pattern in some. There was frothy liquid on the cut surface of the lungs in three of the rats. The histopathology of the kidneys in six rats showed slight cytoplasmic swelling of the distal convoluted tubules and sometimes also of the collecting tubules. But only in four rats a vacuolar-hydropic degeneration with nuclear pyknosis was seen. Twenty-six rats showed liver congestion, three of them with compressive narrowing of the hepatic cords, and in eight Efeito da acetamida sobre a intoxicação experimental em ratos por monoϐluoroacetato de sódio e por plantas brasileiras rats shock corpuscles were observed; another three rats showed slight to moderate focal liver necrosis. A slight to moderate vacuolation of hepatocytes was observed in 16 rats. It can be concluded that acetamide had a protective effect, capable to prevent clinical signs and death of the rats poisoned by MF, and by fresh P. marcgravii leaves and concentrated extracts of seven other BSDCP. The clinical and pathological picture observed in the rats poisoned by MF and BSDCP, associated with the protective effect of acetamide, indicate that MF is the toxic principle responsible for death of ...
Pesq. Vet. Bras. Prevalence, correlation with the pigmentation of the perineal area and macro and microscopic characteristics of the lesions were studied. The tumors on the perineum were of varied development degrees, diameters and forms. On one farm, in the county of Viseu, from a total of 347 goats, 20 presented the neoplasia (5.8%). On the second farm, in the county of Garrafão do Norte, three cases of squamous cell carcinoma in a herd of 400 goats (0.75%) were observed. The tumor was only observed in animals in which the perineal area was despigmented. The high incidence of this tumor appears to be due to lack of pigmentation at the períneo and the high and short tail of the goats, that exposes the area to intense ultraviolet radiation in the tropics.INDEX TERMS: Squamous cell carcinoma, goats, pathology.
This study aimed to establish the incidence of skin tumors (cutaneous proliferative lesions of neoplastic or non-neoplastic nature) in dogs diagnosed by histopathological evaluation at the Veterinary Pathology Laboratory (LPV) of the Federal University of Bahia (UFBA) in a 10-year (2007-2016) historical series. Of the 1945 histopathological diagnoses made in this period, 503 were skin biopsies, and 617 dermatological problems (87 dogs, 17.3%, presented more than one positive diagnosis) were found. Of the 617 diagnoses of dermatopathy, 546 (88.49%) were tumors and 71 (11.51%) were non-tumorous alterations. The 546 conditions more profoundly studied were from 453 dogs, 468 (85.7%) neoplastic and 78 (14.3%) non-neoplastic tumors. The 468 neoplasms were classified as follows: 230 benign (49.14%), 215 malignant (45.94%), 23 borderline (epitheliomas) (4.91%), 51.92% (243/468) mesenchymal, 42.74% (200/468) epithelial, 4.91% (23/468) melanocytic, and 0.43% (2/468) metastatic (mammary gland). The most commonly diagnosed neoplastic dermatopathies were mastocytoma (14.7%) and lipoma (7.48%). Among the 78 non-neoplastic conditions (14.3%), epidermal inclusion cyst (39.74%) and trichogranuloma (15.38%) were the most frequent. Canine dermatopathies accounted for 26% of the biopsy files of the LPV-UFBA. Distinct simultaneous dermatological problems were frequently found in the dogs assessed (one in six). Considering that these conditions can present with different cellular origin and biological behavior, it is crucial that histopathological evaluation be performed in fragments from the different cutaneous lesions.
