L'évolution des caractères socio-économiques des 138 plus grandes agglomérations de province entre 1954 et 1975 comporte trois tendances, interprétées dans cet article d'après leur incidence sur la structure du système urbain. La première, la plus importante, englobe les changements qui ont affecté également toutes les agglomérations, et provoqué une translation du système sans en modifier la forme. Les deux autres tendances regroupent des changements différentiels : l'une a rapproché les profils des agglomérations en réduisant les spécialisations fonctionnelles fondées sur la concentration géographique des branches d'activité; l'autre introduit une nouvelle ségrégation dans les structures socio-économiques urbaines, entre des « centres de croissance » et des noyaux « périphériques ».
