A inesperada situação de pandemia do Coronavirus tem mudado hábitos, pois a vida urbana foi substituída pelo dia-a-dia na residência, levando a população ao confinamento e à convivência com situações improvisadas para o desenvolvimento de diversas tarefas no ambiente familiar. Para além desse contexto, a literatura aponta inadequações da habitação para populações de baixa renda, geralmente em relação a questões do design de ambientes, como reflexo do dimensionamento reduzido. Com a pandemia tais questões migraram das habitações de interesse social e se instalam nos apartamentos de classe média, colocando em lados opostos os argumentos dos pesquisadores/especialistas frente ao poder do mercado imobiliário (que busca aproveitamento máximo de cada metro quadrado dos empreendimentos). Tratando de uma forma diferenciada de habitar, este artigo objetiva analisar residências universitárias sob a ótica da ergonomia aplicada aos ambientes, tendo recortado os dormitórios para o estudo das características do seu design quanto às dimensões, layout e usabilidade. O texto elenca aspectos positivos e negativos desses espaços, num momento em que se destaca a necessidade de reduzir o contato físico entre as pessoas. O trabalho aborda o problema de forma qualitativa, adotando o estudo multicasos definido a partir de uma amostra intencional, conforme o interesse da pesquisa. Ao final constata-se a restrição e inadequação na maioria dos espaços dos dormitórios estudantis analisados.
