It was identified that, in the sample of elderly individuals living in Porto Alegre - RS, Brazil, the intrinsic factors that predispose to the risk of falls and fractures are older age, poor self-perception of eyesight, and poor selfrated health; the extrinsic factors are type of dwelling (living in a house) and a monthly income < one minimum wage.
The training program improved cognitive function, muscle endurance, aerobic conditioning, and balance in older adults with MCI.
Objective: To determine the effects of group exercises on balance, mobility, and depressive symptoms in community-dwelling older adults with mild cognitive impairment. Design: Single blinded, randomized, matched pairs clinical trial. Setting: Four primary healthcare units. Subjects: Fifty-two sedentary subjects with mild cognitive impairment were paired (age, sex, body mass index, and Addenbrooke’s Cognitive Examination Revised score), tested, and then randomized into an intervention group (n = 26) and a control group (n = 26). Intervention: The intervention group performed strength (ankle weights, elastic bands, and dumbbells) and aerobic exercises (walking) in their communities’ public spaces, twice a week (60 minutes each), during 24 weeks. The control group maintained its usual routine. Main measures: Balance (Berg Balance Scale (BBS)), mobility (Timed Up and Go Test (TUG)), and depressive symptoms (Geriatric Depression Scale-15) were assessed before and after the intervention. Results: Before the intervention, the two groups did not differ statistically. After, the intervention group showed significant improvement (P < 0.05) in balance (before: 53 ± 3; after: 55.1 ± 1.1 points), mobility (before: 10.7 ± 2.9 seconds; after: 8.3 ± 2 seconds), and depressive symptoms (median punctuation (interquartile range) before: 4 (1.8–6); after: 2.5 (1–4)). The control group presented a significant increase in their depressive symptoms (median before: 3.5 (2–7.3); after: 4 (2–5.3)), while their balance and mobility showed no significant modification. Small effect sizes were observed in the intervention group and control group depressive symptoms, as well as in the control group’s mobility and balance. Large effect sizes were observed the intervention group’s mobility and balance. Conclusion: Group exercises improved balance, mobility, and depressive symptoms in community-dwelling older adults with mild cognitive impairment.
AbstractObjective: To characterize body image, mood and quality of life in postmenopausal women who seek dermatological physiotherapy, dermatology and aesthetic medicine care. Materials and Methods: Cross-sectional study with 46 women who sought aesthetic care in three locations in the city of Porto Alegre-RS, Brazil. Sociodemographic and health data were collected. The following tools were used: Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS-15), Quality of life questionnaire WHOQOL-bref and Scale of Stunkard silhouettes. In order to evaluate the association between the variables, the correlation coefficients Pearson or Spearman were used. The level of significance was 5% (p≤0.05).
ABSTRACT: This paper aims to compare the risk of falls, indicatives of depression and mobility in the gait of institutionalized elderly and elderly people attending a community center in the city of Foz do Iguaçu, Paraná state. It is a cross-sectional study with 26 elderly of both sexes, 13 institutionalized (ILPI) and 13 attending a community center (CCI). A sociodemographic questionnaire, Berg Balance Scale, Geriatric Depression Scale and the Timed Up and Go Test were used. Data analysis was performed using the Shapiro-Wilk, Mann-Whitney "U" tests, Spearman correlation, and the Chi-square and Fisher's exact test. The significance of p <0.05 was adopted. It is emphasized that, significantly, the elderly of CCI had a lower rate of depression (p = 0.009), a lower risk of falls (p = 0.001) and a better gait mobility (p = 0.001), in contrast to the elderly of the ILPI. After identification that the institutionalized elderly present a higher risk of falls and gait difficulties, as well as depressive signs when compared to non-institutionalized ones, a challenge arises for the health services when facing the functional disability throughout life.
