The topology and geometry of the drainage networks have contributed substantially to geomorphology and hydrology studies, including modern concepts of landscape evolution. This work aims at presenting a methodology for automated extraction of drainage basins and sub-basins, calculating their morphometric attributes and grouping them in accordance to their similarities. The methodology can be subdivided into four stages: (a) elaboration of the hydrologically corrected DEM; (b) delimitation catchment boundaries from digital elevation model (DEM) according to Strahler's drainage network order; (c) determination of the drainage-basin morphometric attributes, and (d) multivariate analysis (factor analysis and cluster analysis). In this paper algorithms for drainage network extraction and catchment boundaries from DEMs, as well as their most pertinent problems, are presented. The DEM preparation included pit filling, stream burning and the calculation of flow direction and flow accumulation grids. The Principal Component Analysis reduced the morphometric attributes of the drainage basins in three factors, with high percentage of the original variance. Cluster analysis defined seven classes of basins with typical morphological patterns. The results suggest that it is viable to apply the same sequence of procedures in other geographic areas.
Abstract:Landscape heterogeneity analysis is fundamental in ecotourism planning since it estimates an optimal relationship between conservation and tourist alternatives. The landscape methodology approach enables to describe not only the scenic beauty, but also the degrees of stability in ecological systems. Landscape research for ecotourism integrates the different natural components (relief, climatic conditions, soil, vegetation cover etc.) and evaluates their interrelationships with the characteristics of the tourist destination. The geomorphology is often regarded as one of the most important factors controlling the spatial heterogeneity of the landscape in areas with high topographic variation. In this case, landform parameters indicate temperature and moisture distribution, exposure towards wind, vegetation, habitats etc. The study area is the Serra dos Órgãos National Park, one of Brazil's most visited national parks, with a vast number of options for ecotourism visitors, such as ecological diversity, historical significance and recreational opportunities. The present paper aims to define the landscape units of Serra dos Órgãos National Park from the remote sensing and terrain attributes. Moreover the paper analyzes the distribution of tourist attraction in relation to the landscape units. Thus, the analysis procedure considers the types of landscapes, spatial structures and limitations. The methodology can be divided in the following stages: (a) digital processing of the terrain attributes images from digital elevation model; (b) remote sensing image interpretation, and (c) delimitation and analysis of the ecotourism attraction. The data integration enabled to identify units in two different hierarchical scale levels. In the geosystem scale, seven classes had been identified presenting different dynamics and environmental vulnerabilities. The method of landscape analysis for ecotourism provided a holistic perspective ...
The evolution of the drainage system is driven by influence structural and changes in the climatic regime resulting in specific morphological features. We studied one of these features - drainage anomalies - in the middle valley of Paraíba do Sul River (RJ/SP), the influence exerted by the lithology and geological structures and the mechanism of the drainage system rearrangement. We identified many morphotectonic features (knickpoints, flat drainage dividers, and low drainage dividers with or without drainage capture) using topographic charts and a geomorphological map Silva (2002), and we also analyzed their spatial distribution to establish a reliable relationship between the drainage anomalies and the substract characteristics. Most of the drainage anomalies identified are located in the Paraíba do Sul Middle Valley Intra-plateau Depression (Depressão Interplanáltica Médio Paraíba do Sul - DIMPS) and show a significant structural control.
AbstractTectonic controls in interior of tectonic plates are important for the understanding of the landscape conformation and last years numerous researchers have sought the use of relief profiles in the search of association with neotectonic activities and / or lithological control. This work rescues the use of the analysis of longitudinal profiles of fluvial channels and relief profiles in the evolutionary research of the landscape. Study area was Guapi-Açu river basin, located in the NE sector of the Guanabara Bay basin (RJ), where significant lithological and/or structural controls were observed through the identification of Local Baseline Levels, Relief asymmetries, Stretches of rising and relegating rivers, among others, suggesting a situation of river (re)adjustments.
The Guanabara Bay in Rio de Janeiro is one of the most important Brazilian morphological features, both in terms of its geological and geomorphological evolution as well as considering its historical importance to the development of Brazil. The existing morphological contrast, varying from mountain escarpments, hills, fluvial, and marine coastal plains, beaches, and lagoons, results from a complex evolution that imprinted in the landscape an intriguing diverse morphology which constitutes a highly attractive touristic natural scenario that is well known internationally.
