Southeastern Brazil is a highly industrialized and populated region which largely contributes to the country's economy. Extreme precipitation over this region can cause floods and landslides occurrences or lack of precipitation that can affect many sectors of economy. The objective of this work is to identify atmospheric characteristics associated with austral summer extreme precipitation over part of Southeastern Brazil. The atmospheric characteristics obtained from wet and dry composites suggest that extreme precipitation was associated with anomalous circulation over the region, forced by a PSA-like wavetrain intensified by the Southern Annular Mode.
Equatorial Pacific and subtropical South Atlantic SST anomalies influence extremely dry austral summers in Grande river basin, Southeast Brazil, with opposite signs.
• The austral summer 2020 in SEB was the wettest in almost twenty years. • Colder SST near SEB and positive SAM phase were important to the wet pattern. • Wavetrain from the Indian Ocean also contributed to the circulation over SEB.
Extreme Antarctic Sea Ice In The Weddell Sea And Links With Teleconnection Patterns Of Climate VariabilityABSTRACTThis article examines the links between the phases of teleconnection patterns of climate variability and the Weddell’s Sea ice extent. The goal is to understand better the sea ice variability and connections between the cryosphere and the atmosphere. This paper focuses on September, the month with the largest sea ice cover in the Weddell Sea. The Southern Annular Mode (SAM), the Atlantic Meridional Mode (AMM) and the Atlantic Subtropical Gradient (ASG) monthly indices were used. The SAM index was calculated through Empirical Orthogonal Function in the geopotential height anomalies of 700 hPa. The AMM index was obtained by the National Centers for Environmental Prediction/National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCEP/NCAR). The ASG index was created using sea surface temperature (SST) data obtained by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (ERSSTv5/NOAA) through the difference of SST anomalies averaged at two distinct areas situated in the Subtropical Atlantic Ocean. Considering the effect of these indices combined, the negative SAM/positive AMM phase and the negative SAM/positive ASG phase were associated with maximum Antarctic sea ice extents. The opposite combinations of indices were related with minimum Antarctic sea ice extents. The correlations between the SAM and the sea ice extent are negative and between AMM and ASG with the sea ice extent are positive. These results are coherent with the results presented in the composite maps and the boxplots charts. Keywords: Teleconnection patterns, climate variability, antarctic sea ice, Weddell Sea.
This study examined the historical (1980-2005) austral summer precipitation in Tropical South America (SA) simulated by five Earth System Models (ESM) from the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 5 (CMIP5). All simulations show a band of maximum precipitation eastward of the observed one and without typical NW-SE orientation. This displacement suggests models have trouble in reproducing the South Atlantic Convergence Zone (SACZ). Due to this and additional model problems in simulating the Atlantic Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ), all models exhibit negative precipitation biases at the extreme northern SA, including Guianas, Suriname, and north of Brazil and positive precipitation biases at part of northeastern Brazil. For extreme northern SA, models, in general, underestimate intense precipitation and overestimate weak rainfall. Analysis of the moisture flux divergence over the northern coast of SA in models suggested that the precipitation bias could primarily stem from model misrepresentations of moisture availability for convection. Further analyses indicate that the moisture flux biases are, in turn, tied to a negative sea surface temperature (SST) bias in the tropical North Atlantic, inducing stronger northeasterly trade winds. Thus, more intense moisture flux goes to the inner continent. Consequently, an anomalous divergence of moisture flux and less precipitation occur near the coast. Despite some differences in energy budget and cloudiness, models results for wind, precipitation, SST, and latent heat flux suggest problems at WES feedback. In the GFDL-ESM and MIROC-ESM models, the negative SST bias was also partly associated with a lower incident shortwave (SW) radiation over the tropical North Atlantic. This SW bias was tied to a positive bias of cloud cover over tropical North Atlantic, at least in the GFDL-ESM.
The variability of Antarctic sea ice (ASI) has great potential to affect atmospheric circulation, with impacts that can extend from the surface to the middle and high levels of troposphere. The present study has evaluated the response of South Atlantic tropospheric circulation to increased coverage in area and volume of ASI. Monthly data of air temperature, zonal and meridional wind and mean sea level pressure were obtained from two ensemble simulations performed with the GDFL/CM2.1 model, covering the period from July 2020 to June 2030. In general, the response of South Atlantic tropospheric circulation to increased ASI showed that the climatic signal extended up from the surface to the high levels, propagating as a South Pole-Tropics teleconnection. The results show a general cooling of the southern troposphere, which for instance lead to the strengthening and northward shift of the polar jet and the southward shift of the subtropical jet and to an inversion f rom the positive to negative phase of the Southern Annular Mode. This study has great relevance for understanding the global climate changes in short term, by assessing the sensitivity of South Atlantic tropospheric circulation to extreme variations in ASI.
ABSTRACT: EVALUATION OF THE ETA REGIONAL MODEL FORECASTS FOR TWO CASES OF INTENSE RAINFALL OVER THE SERRA DO MAR REGIONIntense rainfall over Southeastern Brazil frequently causes flooding and landslides, mainly in Serra do Mar region. For this reason, the study of significant rainfall events over this region is important to understand their behavior and improve their representation in numerical prediction models. Two cases of intense rainfall were chosen for this study (02/02/1983 and 25/05/2005). Both cases were associated with a convective cluster embedded in a frontal system. The synoptic analysis depicted, in the first case, a type Y configuration, consisting of a frontal system and cloudiness associated with the Bolivian High and the Upper Level Cyclonic Vortex over Northeastern Brazil. The second case consisted of squall lines associated with a frontal system. Despite some slight phase errors regarding the location of the most significant rainfall sector, the atmospheric pattern associated with the extreme rainfall cases over Serra do Mar were well simulated by the regional eta model, including the magnitude of the intense precipitation. Mesoscale features were analyzed in the high resolution model outputs, such as the sea breeze (first case) and orography (first and s...
