Intense microwaves are injected from a slot antenna into water partly filling a metal vessel. When the vessel is evacuated to saturated vapor pressure (∼5×103Pa) of water, microwave breakdown gives rise to plasmas in many bubbles in the boiling water. Gas bubbling technique enables production of multibubble plasmas in water even at atmospheric pressure. Optical emissions from the exited species are investigated to identify radical species in water. In order to demonstrate application to purification of polluted water, methylene blue and trichlorethylene solution in 8l water were observed to rapidly decrease with multibubble plasma treatment.
We investigated cold plasma effects on acute wounds of mice. The mice were classified into experimental and control groups. In the former, wounds were treated using cold plasma once daily for 1 minute, and then covered with hydrocolloid dressing; wounds in the control were left to heal under hydrocolloid dressing. Daily evaluation was conducted for 15 days. General and specific staining was applied to evaluate re-epithelialization, neutrophil, macrophage, myofibroblast and transforming growth factor beta. It was found that cold plasma accelerated wound healing by one day. Plasma may promote the late phase of inflammation, accelerate reepithelialization and increase wound contraction.3
The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of the intermediate frequency (1-10 kHz) of the sinusoidal driving voltage on the characteristics of a developed surface dielectric barrier discharge (SDBD)-based reactor having spikes on its discharge electrode. Moreover, its influence on the production of ozone and nitrogen oxide byproducts is evaluated. The results show that SDBD is operated in the filamentary mode at all the frequencies. Nevertheless, the pulses of the discharge current at high frequencies are much denser and have higher amplitudes than those at low frequencies. The analysis of the power consumed in the reactor shows that a small portion of the input power is dissipated in the dielectric material of SDBD source, whereas the major part of the power is consumed in the plasma discharge. The results of the ozone production show that higher frequencies have a slightly adverse effect on the ozone production at relatively high energy density values, where the ozone concentration is slightly decreased when the frequency is increased at the same energy density. The temperature of the discharge channels and gas is not a crucial factor for the decomposition of ozone in this reactor, while the results of the measurements of nitrogen oxides characteristics 2 indicate that the formation of NO and NO 2 has a significant adverse effect on the production efficiency of ozone due to their oxidation to another nitrogen oxides and their catalytic effect.
In this review, we discuss the progress of emerging dry processes for nanoscale fabrication of high-aspect-ratio features, including emerging design technology for manufacturability. Experts in the fields of plasma processing have contributed to addressing the increasingly challenging demands of nanoscale deposition and etching technologies for high-aspect-ratio features. The discussion of our atomic-scale understanding of physicochemical reactions involving ion bombardment and neutral transport presents the major challenges shared across the plasma science and technology community. Focus is placed on advances in fabrication technology that control surface reactions on three-dimensional features, as well as state-of-the-art techniques used in semiconductor manufacturing with a brief summary of future challenges.
In order to obtain improved confinement plasmas with high radiation at high density, Ar gas was injected into ELMy H mode plasmas in JT-60U. A confinement improvement of HH 98(y,2) ≈ 1 was obtained with a high radiation loss power fraction (∼80%) at an electron density of ∼0.65nGW . The HH factor was about 50% higher than that in plasmas without Ar injection.
Microwave bubble plasma in water is a novel plasma applicable to the processing of materials in liquid. An electromagnetic simulation of slot excitation of microwaves reveals that the electric field at a slot antenna is significantly influenced by the size of the bubble existing in front of the antenna. To improve the power efficiency and the plasma stability, a bubble control plate is installed adjacent to the antenna, the effect of which on the electric field enhancement is confirmed in the simulation. Furthermore, three slot antennas are newly developed. According to these modifications of the microwave excitation system, a dramatic increase in the decomposition efficiency of an organic solute by a factor of 20 is found in the experiment.
