These results indicate that clinical characteristics of HFmrEF are intermediate between HFpEF and HFrEF and that HFmrEF dynamically transitions to HFpEF or HFrEF, especially within 1 year, suggesting that HFmrEF represents a transitional status or an overlap zone between HFpEF and HFrEF, rather than an independent entity of HF.
Recent progress in biological clock research has facilitated genetic analysis of circadian rhythm sleep disorders, such as delayed sleep phase syndrome (DSPS) and non-24-h sleep-wake syndrome (N-24). We analyzed the human period3 (hPer3) gene, one of the human homologs of the Drosophila clock-gene period (Per), as a possible candidate for rhythm disorder susceptibility. All of the coding exons in the hPer3 gene were screened for polymorphisms by a PCR-based strategy using genomic DNA samples from sleep disorder patients and control subjects. We identified six sequence variations with amino acid changes, of which five were common and predicted four haplotypes of the hPer3 gene. One of the haplotypes was significantly associated with DSPS (Bonferroni's corrected P = 0.037; odds ratio = 7.79; 95% CI 1.59-38.3) in our study population. Our results suggest that structural polymorphisms in the hPer3 gene may be implicated in the pathogenesis of DSPS.
The effects of jump training on bone morphological and mechanical properties were investigated in immature bones of female Fischer 344 rats. Five-week-old rats were divided into control or five jump-trained groups comprised of 5-, 10-, 20-, 40-, and 100-jump groups, representing the number of jumps per day. The rats were jump-trained 5 days/week for 8 weeks, and the height of jump was increased to 40 cm progressively. The femur and tibia in the 5-jump group had significantly greater fat-free dry weights per body weight and maximum loads at the fracture tests than those in the control group. The tibia in the 5-jump group also had significantly larger cortical area at the cross-sectional analysis. Although a slight tendency toward increase according to the number of jumps per day was observed, there were few differences in bone morphological and mechanical parameters among the 10-, 20-, and 40-jump groups. The present results indicate that a large number of strains per day is not necessary for bone hypertrophy to develop in
Abstract.A superimposed epoch analysis has been undertaken, in order to find the correlation of the ionospheric perturbations with seismic activity. We take the wave path from the Japanese LF transmitter (frequency=40 kHz) and an observing station of Kochi (wave path length of 770 km), and a much longer period (of five years) than before, is considered. This subionospheric LF propagation can be called "an integrated measurement" in the sense that any earthquakes in the LF sensitive area just around the great-circle path can influence the observed LF signals, so that we define the "effective magnitude" (Meff) by integrating the total energy from different earthquakes in the sensitive area on a current day and by converting it back into magnitude. A superimposed epoch analysis for the effective magnitude greater than 6.0 has yielded that the ionosphere is definitely disturbed in terms of both amplitude and dispersion, and that these perturbations tend to take place prior to an earthquake. The statistical z-test has also been performed, which has indicated that the amplitude is definitely depleted 2-6 days before the earthquake day and also that the dispersion is very much enhanced during the same period. This statistical study has given strong support to the existence of seismo-ionospheric perturbations for high seismic activity.
We report a measurement of muon-neutrino disappearance in the T2K experiment. The 295-km muon-neutrino beam from Tokai to Kamioka is the first implementation of the off-axis technique in a long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiment. With data corresponding to 1.43×10 20 protons on target, we observe 31 fully-contained single µ-like ring events in Super-Kamiokande, compared with an expectation of 104 ± 14 (syst) events without neutrino oscillations. The best-fit point for two-flavor νµ → ντ oscillations is sin 2 (2θ23) = 0.98 and |∆m 2 32 | = 2.65 × 10 −3 eV 2 . The boundary of the 90% confidence region includes the points (sin 2 (2θ23), |∆m 2 32 |) = (1.0, 3.1×10 −3 eV 2 ), (0.84, 2.65×10 −3 eV 2 ) and (1.0, 2.2×10 −3 eV 2 ).
Wound healing on skin involves cell migration and proliferation in response to endogenous electric current. External electrical stimulation by electrical equipment is used to promote these biological processes for the treatment of chronic wounds and ulcers. Miniaturization of the electrical stimulation device for wound healing on skin will make this technology more widely available. Using flexible enzymatic electrodes and stretchable hydrogel, a stretchable bioelectric plaster is fabricated with a built-in enzymatic biofuel cell (EBFC) that fits to skin and generates ionic current along the surface of the skin by enzymatic electrochemical reactions for more than 12 h. To investigate the efficacy of the fabricated bioelectric plaster, an artificial wound is made on the back skin of a live mouse and the wound healing is observed for 7 d in the presence and absence of the ionic current of the bioelectric plaster. The time course of the wound size as well as the hematoxylin and eosin staining of the skin section reveals that the ionic current of the plaster leads to faster and smoother wound healing. The present work demonstrates a proof of concept for the electrical manipulation of biological functions by EBFCs.
