The present study investigated the influence of two Brazilian environments on the physico-chemical and physiological properties of Jatropha curcas L. (physic nut) – an oilseed plant of great potential in biodiesel production. Fruits and seeds of plants grown in the Brazilian Atlantic rainforest (AF) and in the semiarid climate of Caatinga (SA) were compared. Fruits from the SA were longer, wider and heavier than those from the AF. In contrast, the AF seeds were larger and heavier than the SA seeds. Soluble sugars, protein, relative water content and electrical conductivity of the SA seeds significantly exceeded that of the AF seeds by 28%, 23%, 32% and 94%, respectively. Seeds of the AF had a significantly greater percentage germination (17.5%) and needed less time to germinate (10%) than did the SA seeds. Shoot dry biomass of seedlings grown from the AF seeds significantly exceeded that of the SA by 18.5%. Results suggest this pattern may be due to the higher carbon storage (i.e. sugars, proteins and oil) in the AF than SA seeds. Further studies are warranted to verify whether the differences observed between the seed sources investigated in the present study could be due to varietal or biotype factors.
PRODUCTION OF ROOTSTOCKS IN TUBETTES AND EARLY GRAFTING OF SUGAR-APPLE (Annona squamosa L.)ABSTRACT -The objective of this work was to establish a protocol for early grafting in sugar apple seedlings developed in small capacity plastic tubettes as a substitute for the traditional grafting system that uses 12 months-old seedlings developed in plastic bags. The work was carried out with three budding/grafting methods (chip budding, split graft and side-stub graft) and four rootstocks ages (3, 5, 7 and 9 months). The rootstocks were evaluated for 9 months with regard to the following variables: length of the plant, diameter of stem, leaf number and leaf area. Each budding/grafting procedure was evaluated after 30 days and the percentage of union. The rootstocks produced in bigger tubetes showed to be more developed for all variables during the evaluated period. The success of the union did not vary between the two types of containers. The split graft revealed to be the best method as it presented a 96, 69% union success in the early 3 month-old rootstocks. The method side-stub graft presented similar percentage rates from 5 months-old rootstocks. The chip budding method initially presented a low success union rate (<50%), but it increased at each new budding date and reached 80% union success in 7 months-old rootstocks.
MINIMUM MORPHOLOGICAL DESCRIPTORS TO DIFFERENTIATE SUGAR APPLE (Annona squamosa L.) GENOTYPES ABSTRACT:The morphological characterization through visible and measurable botanical descriptors is one of the methods used to distinguish different cultivars of plant species. In the Annonaceae family morphological characterization of cultivars has been proposed only for cherimoya (Annona cherimoya Mill.) because of its large genetic variability obtained through breeding programs worldwide. Domestication of other members of this family and their growing importance in fruit production has given rise to a strong demand for new cultivars with more productive and commercial attributes. In the case of sugar apple (Annona squamosa L.), which for centuries has variations have been observed in the types grown in different regions of the world and also in Brazil. Some of these plants have great commercial appeal and, if multiplied vegetatively, could lead to new commercial cultivars. In Palmeira dos Indios, traditional producer of sugar apple region in Alagoas, beyond the typical genotype Creole can also be found plants wi...
