THE PRODUCTION OF ANNONA FRUITS IN BRAZILABSTRACT -The Annonaceae family comprehends a group of plants that has been cultivated in many parts of the world, mainly by producing fruits of great commercial interest. Among its most prominent members are the cherimoya (Annona cherimola), sugar apple (A. squamosa), atemoya (hybrid of both), and soursop (A. muricata). In Brazil, due to its tropical climate throughout most of its territory, the cherimoya has been less cultivated because of its requirement for lower temperatures. In contrast, other species are cultivated in different regions of the country to meet the demand of the markets for fresh (sugar apple and atemoya) and processed (soursop) fruits. However, the interest in this group of plants is more far-reaching considering that numerous studies show that secondary compounds obtained from various Annonaceae has pesticide and anti-tumour activity. This study aims to present the panorama of the annonaceus production in Brazil, focusing on the main species grown in different regions of the country. For such, in the year 2012 were surveyed the production data and main technologies used to crop these species. The results demonstrate a vigorous growth in the total area of cultivation and a reasonable use of modern technologies for the three species studied. Link also to an expansion of cultivation in all regi...
In vitro conservation of sugarcane germplasmAbstract -The objective of this work was to evaluate the effect of temperature, of sucrose, sorbitol and manitol, as carbon source and osmotic regulator, and of abscisic acid, as growth regulator, on in vitro germplasm conservation of sugarcane. Stem tips of 10 month old plants collected from the sugarcane germplasm bank of the Universidade Federal de Alagoas in Brazil were introduced in vitro and secondary shoots were produced in a multiplication medium. New shoots collected after four subcultures were used in three conservation experiments. There was a positive effect of the low temperature and sucrose as an osmotic regulator and carbon source in maintaining the viability of the explants cultured in vitro. Abscisic acid (1 mg/L) was essential to maintain the explants in a reduced growth condition for 52 weeks without any subculture. The explants promptly returned to normal growth in vitro or were readily acclimatized after 52 weeks of conservation, in the medium with abscisic acid (1 mg/L) plus sucrose (20 g/L) at 15ºC.
This high quality propagule has usually a higher price in the market than field propagated seedlings. Several factors contribute to its final costs: need of specialized labour, need of well equipped laboratory and acclimatization structure, low multiplication rate of some varieties etc. The work presented here reports the development of a new way to micropropagate banana var. Terra, a known slow seedling producing variety, by using a temporary immersion bioreactor. The aim of this work was to increase the multiplication rate of this variety of banana and to reduce the costs of production of the micropropagated seedlings. The results showed that the immersion cycle of 4 hours with medium culture renewed at 30 days was essential to a higher biomass and explants growth. The composition of the medium culture positively influenced the development of the banana explants cultured in the bioreactors. Cultured explants in MS medium + 3 mg/L of BAP changed to a basic MS medium after 30 days presented the higher biomass and multiplication rate of all treatments. Traditional cultivation using semi-solid media was compared to a temporary immersion system and the results showed that the temporary immersion system presented 2.86 times more biomass production and 2,20 times more viable shoots than the traditional semi-solid system. Among the many species of native fruit of Brazil that have been little explored, there is Myrciaria floribunda (also known as rumberry, cambuizeiro, or guavaberry), a species with significant variability, which has fruits of different colors (orange, red, and purple) when ripe. The physical-chemical characteristics evaluated were fruit weight (FW), seed weight (SW), pulp weight (PW), number of seeds (NS), longitudinal diameter (LD), transverse diameter (TD), format (LD/TD), hydrogen potential (pH), soluble solids (SS), titratable acidity (TA), and ratio (SS/TA); further, the volatile organic compounds (VOCs) of nine accesses of rumberry orchards were identified. The averages of the variables FW, SW, PW, NS, LD, TD, shape, and firmness were 0.76 g, 0.22 g, 0.54 g, 1.45, 10.06 mm, 9.90 mm, 1.02, 2.96 N, respectively. LD/TD data showed that the fruits have a slightly rounded shape (LD/TD = 1). The averages for pH, SS, TA, and SS/TA were 3.74, 17.58 Brix, 4.31% citric acid, and 4.31, respectively. The evaluated parameters indicated that the fruits can be consumed both in natura and industrialized, with the red-colored fruits presenting a good balance of SS/TA, standards demanded by the processing industries. Thirty-six VOCs were identified, with emphasis on the sesquiterpenes. Caryophyllene (21.6% to 49.3%) and γ-selinene (11.3% to 16.3%) were the most predominant compounds in rumberry fruits.
A micropropagation system for Annona squamosa L. (Sugar Apple) using hypocotyls of seedlings and nodal cuttings from 3-year-old plants was developed. Shoot proliferation was achieved with Woody Plant Medium supplemented with BA. Silver thiosulphate was added at 0.5 mg 1-1 to control leaf abscission. Rooting was obtained when subcultured shoots were preconditioned for 2 weeks in medium with 10 g 1-1 activated charcoal before treatment with 43 #m NAA or 39/zm IBA. Rooting was improved when galactose was used instead of sucrose in the rooting medium. The rooted plantlets were acclimatised successfully.
The aim of this study was to evaluate the storage potential of the pollen grains of Brazil Green Dwarf (BGD), Brazilian Tall (BRA) and Cameroon Red Dwarf (CRD) coconut accessions under different storage conditions. Representative plants of BGD, BRA and CRD accessions were selected from the Coconut Active Germplasm Bank of Embrapa Coastal Tablelands. The pollen grains were collected, placed in cryotubes and maintained under the following storage conditions: T1, refrigerator (-4°C); T2, freezer (-20°C); T3, ultrafreezer (-80°C) and T4, liquid nitrogen (-196°C). The pollen grain viability was determined by staining with 1% acetic carmine and in vitro germination in a Lora culture medium at 30 and 60 days after the storage. Storage under refrigerator (-4°C), freezer (-80°C) and liquid nitrogen (-196°C) conditions promoted a better pollen grain viability of the Brazilian Tall coconut accession. Storage under freezer (-20°C) and liquid nitrogen (-196°C) conditions promoted a better pollen grain viability of the Cameroon Red Dwarf coconut accession. Storage under freezer (-20°C and -80°C) and liquid nitrogen (-196°C) conditions promoted a better pollen grain viability of the Brazil Green Dwarf coconut accession. The pollen grain viability of the Brazilian Tall coconut accession is stable after 30 and 60 days of storage.
