The excitation functions of the yield of protons emitted in the D(d,p)T reaction in Ti, Fe, Pd, PdO and Au were measured for bombarding energies between 2.5 and 10 keV. It was found that the reaction rate at lower energies varies greatly with the host materials. The most strongly enhanced DD reaction occurs in PdO. At E d ¼ 2:5 keV, it is enhanced by factor of fifty from the bare deuteron rate and the screening energy deduced from the excitation function amounts to 600 eV. An enhancement of this size cannot be explained by electron screening alone but suggests the existence of an additional and important mechanism of the screening in solids.

Radioactive endohedral 7 Be@C 60 can be detected using radiochemical and radiochromatographic techniques in the final solvent. Such a 7 Be atom can penetrate into the C 60 cage to produce 7 Be@C 60 by a recoil process of the nuclear reactions. An ab initio molecular dynamics simulation was carried out to demonstrate that a direct insertion process is really possible. Emission probability of bremsstrahlung in the a decay of 210 Po was measured in a-g coincidence measurements with Si and Ge detectors. It was found that the bremsstrahlung yields are much smaller than those predicted by a Coulomb acceleration model, in which g rays are emitted during acceleration outside the barrier. This suggests that the radiation amplitude in the barrier cannot be neglected, and the discussion based on a quasiclassical approach is given.
