The management of four pregnancies in two phenylketonuric women is described. A successful outcome in these pregnancies is ascribed to the initiation of treatment prior to conception and the maintenance of tight control with serum phenylalanine between 100 and 400 mumol/l throughout the gestation period. A trial of diet is desirable before a decision is made about pregnancy and before contraception is ceased. Close contact must be maintained with female phenylketonurics throughout their reproductive life to ensure that this process is followed.
SYNOPSIS
Strains of cytomegalovirus, (CMV) have been isolated from 53 children and 2 adults in Melbourne during the 4 years to June 1966.
Of these, 47 were children with various disease syndromes which we consider were in most cases caused by the virus; 6 children and 2 adults were apparently ‘well’family contacts of these children.
In 29 children the infection was apparently contracted in utero, and in 7 others there was strong presumptive evidence that the infection was acquired after birth. The evidence was not sufficient to determine the time of infection in 11 children.
This report comprises a presentation and discussion of the clinical features and the laboratory methods and findings.
Hyaline membranes are seen in the lungs of nearly one-third of prematurely born infants who die after birth at the Royal Women's Hospital, Melbourne. The nature of the membranes has been discussed often in the literature (Farber
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
