Objective: To identify polypharmacy and potentially inappropriate medications (PIM) for elder people with chronic health situations and its implications for gerontological nursing. Method: Descriptive and transversal study, conducted from March to September 2016 by pharmaceutical residents in the clinic of Endocrinology of a hospital in Mid-West region of Brazil. Results: 44 elder people with an average age of 69.5 (± 6.79) years old had their assessed prescriptions. We identified 65 medications prescribed 253 times, in which 10 PIM (15.4%) were prescribed 51 times. 33 seniors (72.7%) had at least one PIM, of those, 66.7% were polymedicated. Of the total, 22 elder people (50%) were subjected to polypharmacy and made use of at least one PIM. Conclusion: The results showed high incidence of PIM and polypharmacy, as well as their physiological impacts to the elder population. The study provokes discussions about that the trained nurse in human aging has skills and competencies able to enhance interventions related to pharmacotherapy.

Objective: To investigate the influence of a protocol of Pilates exercises on the functionality and contractility of the pelvic floor muscles (PFM) of older women living in the city of Campo Grande, Mato Grosso, Brazil. Method: Ten women (median age of 63.4±4.5 years) with little or no pelvic floor dysfunction were subjected to 24 sessions of Pilates exercises lasting one hour each, for 12 weeks. The pressure of the pelvic floor muscles (PFM) was assessed using a perineometer (cmH 2 0) and contractility was assessed with the PERFECT scheme. Data were described as median ± interquartile range and inferential analysis was performed using the Wilcoxon paired test, with a significance level of 5%. Results: In view of the proposed treatment, the degree of voluntary contraction of the PFM of the participants increased from 79.0±83.5 to 90.0±82.0 cmH 2 0, with a statistically significant difference in paired comparison ( p=0.012). According to the PERFECT scheme, there was an increase in contraction time (from 5.0±0.1 to 7.0±4.7 seconds) and in the number of fast repetitions (from 7.0±4.5 to 8.0±4.7), with a statistically significant difference for both variables ( p=0.017 and p=0.008, respectively). Conclusion: The results indicate that the Pilates method increased the contractility and pressure of the PFM of elderly women with little or no PFM impairment. Further studies are required to determine whether the Pilates method is an effective method for the treatment of women with severe pelvic floor dysfunction.

Introduction: Stroke (Stroke) affects 15 million people annually, causing the death of 6.7 million. It is considered the predominant neurological disease in clinical practice, which brings neurological deficits such as total or partial paralysis of the hemibody (hemiparesis and hemiplegia), sensory, cognitive and visual impairment. In addition to impairing the performance of activities of daily living, the physical disabilities generated, decline the autonomy and independence of the individual, thus, physiotherapeutic assistance of paramount importance for rehabilitation, reversal, or minimizing the sequelae caused by stroke. Objective: to analyze the effects of functionality and quality of life on post-stroke patients. Method: this is a quantitative study, with a descriptive approach, carried out in an Integrated Continuous Care unit in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul (MS), with patients for stroke victims. Results: the research had a total of 21 participants, 21 (100%), with ages varying from 24 to 65 years old, being 62% male and 91% predominantly stroke. Based on the data, it was possible to observe that 81% of patients at the beginning of their hospitalization had some degree of dependence before any intervention of physiotherapy, or other professionals from the multiprofessional team, with 38% having a degree of severe or total dependence, only 4 patients (19%) were independent after being victims of Stroke. However, at hospital discharge 58% of the patients became completely independent, only 19%, corresponding to 4 patients, of the total surveyed, still had total or severe dependence, 81% of the patients achieved some gain in their clinical condition during hospitalization that corroborated in greater independence and autonomy. Conclusion: individuals affected by stroke have sequelae that corroborate the decline in the quality of life functionality, since the two are interconnected, results of risk factors that may be delineating a new profile of this population composed of individuals under 60 years old, predominantly male.

Cuidado paliativo (CP) é uma abordagem que promove alívio de sofrimento de pessoas com doenças incuráveis que ameaçam a continuidade da vida. O objetivo deste estudo foi traçar as características dos pacientes com indicação de CP em uma unidade de cuidados prolongados (UCP). Trata-se de um estudo transversal, quantitativo, retrospectivo e com coleta de dados em prontuário. No período do estudo, houve 389 admissões na UCP e, dessas, 31 prontuários foram incluídos para este estudo. Destacou-se a população idosa, compondo mais de 80% da amostra; 54,8% eram mulheres, acometidas principalmente por doenças crônicas relacionadas ao processo de envelhecimento, como as doenças neurodegenerativas e com internação de curto prazo; e 84% foram a óbito. Foi observada a necessidade de fortalecimento dos CPs na Atenção Primária de Saúde, para que os pacientes que receberem alta hospitalar possam receber todo o auxílio e suporte com qualidade em domicílio.
