AbstractMany women will live for 30 years or longer after menopause, raising the issue of hormone replacement therapy. The loss of bone density with increasing duration after menopause is a potential biological marker for an estrogen deficit. Also, a number of studies have indicated cognitive loss associated with long estrogen deficits. We studied whether bone density is associated with cognitive function. Osteoporosis may lead to restricted mobility and limited social contacts and thus to decreased cognitive function. We analyzed the duration of the estrogen deficit (years since menopause without hormone replacement) and fat depots as extraovarian estrogen sources in light of results of tests of short-term cognitive function. If bone loss were associated with decreased cognitive function in otherwise healthy postmenopausal women, this would be an issue in counseling with regard to hormone replacement.
