A long-term experiment on a clayey, kaolinitic, thermic Rhodic Hapludox where dolomitic lime was applied to the surface (either at 4.5 t ⁄ ha or at 1.5 t ⁄ ha per yr for 3 yr), or incorporated into the topsoil (4.5 t ⁄ ha), and gypsum applied to the surface (3, 6, and 9 t ⁄ ha), was carried out to evaluate their effects on soil profile chemical properties and yields of corn (Zea mays L.) and soybean (Glycine max L. Merrill). Lime applied to the soil surface at either full or split rates, or incorporated and surfaceapplied gypsum had long-lasting effects on soil acidity or calcium and sulphur availability respectively, as measured 8 yr after application. Grain yields of corn and soybean were not influenced by liming. Gypsum at 9 t ⁄ ha significantly increased corn grain yields by 7 and 8% respectively 7-10 yr after application, but did not affect soybean grain yields. The differences in response of the corn and soybean crops to gypsum might be related to the Ca 2+ uptake by plants because of cation exchange properties of roots, being smaller for corn than for soybean. The use of gypsum in no-till systems becomes more viable when corn is grown with a greater frequency in crop rotation.
The conditions in which a favorable response to a gypsum application can be expected on crop yields are not clear. A 3-year field trial was carried out to evaluate the effects of gypsum application on soil chemical attributes and nutrition and yield of corn (Zea mays L.) and soybean (Glycine max L. Merrill) on a clayey Typic Hapludox of high fertility and low acidity under no-till in Guarapuava, Parana State, Brazil. Treatments were arranged in a randomized complete block design with four replications, and consisted of gypsum application on the soil surface at 4, 8, and 12 Mg ha -1. Gypsum application increased the P content in the soil most superficial layer (0.0 -0.1 m) and also the exchangeable Ca and S-SO4 2-contents and the Ca/Mg ratio in the soil profile (0.0 -0.6 m). Gypsum also caused leaching of Mg and K exchangeable in the soil. An increase in Ca concentrations in the corn leaves, and in P and S concentrations in the corn and soybean leaves occurred following the gypsum application. A yield response of corn to initial application of gypsum was found, but subsequent soybean crops did not respond. Gypsum application proved to be an effective practice to maximize no-till corn grain yield.
Effects of lime and gypsum applications on the quality of soybeans grown under no-till (NT) are not well defined yet. A field trial established in 1998 on a dystrophic clayey Rhodic Hapludox, at Ponta Grossa, State of Paraná, Brazil, evaluated grain yield and soybean quality based on oil, protein and nutrient content, after lime and gypsum applications under NT, in a randomized complete block design (n = 3), split-plot experiment. In the main plots, the treatments with dolomitic lime were: control (no lime), split application of lime on the surface (three yearly applications of 1.5 Mg ha -1 ), surface lime (4.5 Mg ha -1 ), and incorporated lime (4.5 Mg ha -1 ). Subplots received four different rates of gypsum: 0, 3, 6, and 9 Mg ha -1 . The soybean crop was evaluated in the agricultural years of 2002-2003 and 2003-2004. After 58 months, the correction of acidity through surface liming, with full or split rates, was more pronounced in the top layer (0-0.05 m) and there was greater reaction at the depths of 0.05-0.10 and 0.10-0.20 m when lime was incorporated. Surface or incorporated liming had no effect on grain yield, soybean oil and protein content. Gypsum improved chemical subsoil conditions, raising pH (0.01 mol L -1 CaCl 2 ) as well as Ca 2+ and S-SO 4 2-contents; it also caused exchangeable Mg 2+ leaching in the soil profile. The application of gypsum did not affect grain yield, yet it improved soybean quality through an increase in protein and S contents, in [2003][2004], and in grain P, K and Ca, in the two cropping years. The use of gypsum in NT soybeans can be especially important for fields of seeds production.
Gypsum has been used in tropical and subtropical agriculture when subsoil acidity is an important yield-limiting factor. However, the conditions that promote increased crop yield as a result of gypsum addition in no-till (NT) systems still remain unclear. A fi eld trial examined the eff ects of newly and previously surface-applied gypsum in a long-term NT system on the soil chemical properties and nutrition and yield of corn (Zea mays L.), wheat (Triticum aestivum L.), and soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] on a clayey Rhodic Hapludox in Parana State, Brazil. Gypsum was surface-applied at 0 and 6 Mg ha -1 in 2004 on plots that had received gypsum previously at 0, 3, 6, and 9 Mg ha -1 in 1998. Surface-applied gypsum newly and previously improved exchangeable Ca and SO 4 -S availability throughout the soil profi le, and increased the cumulative grain yield of the crops. Exchangeable K losses through leaching caused by gypsum application were low, and a larger mobility of exchangeable Mg as compared with exchangeable K in soil was found as a result of gypsum addition.
Crop root growth and grain yield can be affected by chemical modifications in the soil profile due to surface lime application. A field trial was carried out on a loamy dystrophic Typic Hapludox at Ponta Grossa, State of Paraná, Brazil, to evaluate root growth and grain yield of wheat (Triticum aestivum L. cv. CD 104, moderately susceptible to Al), about 10 years after surface liming (0, 2, 4, and 6 Mg ha -1 ) and three years after surface re-liming (0 and 3 Mg ha -1 ), in a long-term no-till cultivation system. Soil acidity limited wheat root growth and yield severely, probably as a result of extended water deficits during the vegetative stage. Surface liming caused increases up to 66% in the root growth (0-60 cm) and up to 140% in the grain yield. Root density and grain yield were correlated positively with soil pH and exchangeable Ca 2+ , and negatively with exchangeable Al 3+ and Al 3+ saturation, in the surface and subsurface layers. The effects of soil chemical changes on soybean root growth, mineral nutrition and grain yield, as a result of surface application of lime under no-till (NT), are still under discussion. A field trial was carried out on a loamy dystrophic Typic Hapludox at Ponta Grossa, Paraná State, Brazil, using a completely randomized block design with three replicates, in a split-plot experiment. The main plots received four dolomitic lime rates applied on the surface (0, 2, 4, and 6 Mg ha 3+ trocável e a saturação por alumínio do solo, até a profundidade de 60 cm.
