Background: Medical students, especially those of higher classes, are more likely to be severely distressed due to their clinical rotations. Moreover, exposure to critical patients, lack of social life and selection of speciality etc are few of the stresses in the lives of senior medical students. Aim: To assess the degree of mental stress in medical students. Study Design: Cross-sectional study. Methodology: The M.B.B.S students of higher classes, i.e., third, fourth and fifth year students, were included in the current study. The Kessler psychological distress scale was used to assess the degree of mental stress in medical students. Each questionnaires, having 10 questions, was distributed among the 230 students at Farooq Hospital Westwood, Lahore. Out of 230, 189 students filled the questionnaires. Data was evaluated by using SPSS version 20. Results: Majority of the students 36% had severe psychological distress. About 19% and 16% students had been found to have mild and moderate level of psychological distress respectively. Only 29 % students were doing well. Conclusion: It was concluded that Majority of medical students were found suffering from severe psychological distress. Keywords: Social Media, Medical Students, Mental Health and Mental Distress.
Background: Social media over usage is becoming an addictive behaviour in medical students. This excessive use of social media websites is compromising the mental health of the medical students. Aim: To find the relation of social media overuse on mental well being of medical students. Study design: Cross-sectional study. Methodology: Third, Fourth and fifth year MBBS students of Akhtar Saeed Medical and Dental college, Lahore were included in the current study. 230 Questionnaires were distributed among the students. The questionnaire was in two parts. In one part 10 questions were asked, related to five famous social media websites usage. The second part of the questionnaire contained Kessler psychological distress scale. Out of 230 students, 195 students filled the questionnaires. Data was evaluated by using SPSS version 20. Results: Majority of the students (42 %) were turned out to be severely distressed. 37% students were doing well while 28% and 16% students had mild and moderate distress. All of the severely distressed students used facebook, instagram and watsapp. 98.43% students used snapchat and 82.81 % students used tiktok. Those with severe distress, were found to spend more than 1 hour per day on social media websites. Conclusion: It was concluded that there is a strong correlation of the time spent on social media with the mental well being of medical students. Many drugs have been found to induce oxidative stress. Oxidative stress is responsible for a large number of diseases. Chloroquine is one of the drugs, which can induce oxidative stress, when it is given at higher dose. Purpose: To find the effect of chloroquine as stress inducer on albino mice. Study Design: Randomized clinical trial. Methodology: Sixty male albino mice were taken into this randomized controlled study. Those were divided into two groups of 30 each. Group A was the control group while group B mice were given single oral dose of 970 mg/kg of body weight of chloroquine on 9th day of experiment. Terminal intracardiac blood sample was obtained on 17th day of experiment. Statistical analysis: SPSS version 23 was used for data analysis. Results: When results of group B were compared with those of group A, there was highly significant (p= 0.000) rise in serum malondialdehyde level and highly significant (p= 0.000) decrease in serum glutathione peroxidase level. Conclusion: It was concluded that Chloroquine induces oxidative stress when it is given at the dose of 970 mg/kg of body weight in mice. Keywords: Chloroquine, Oxidative Stress and Malondialdehyde.
