OQ 0A remaining unanswered question is whether these planar molecules are in fact more stable than the nonplanar bicyclic isomers [e.g. (2) +(2c)]. Some extended Hiickel calculations indicate that (2) is more stable than (2c). but we d o not consider the result very reliable in this instance. The stabilization of (3) is of great interest, since it suggests the possibility of achieving a Cope rearrangement with negative activation energy.A related class of molecules is exemplified by ( 5 ) . The classical valence structure (5a) implies a diradical; however, the resonance structure (5b) clearly suggests a closed shell, and
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
