This study aimed to evaluate metformin as a widely used oral hypoglycemic agent and identify the effects on biochemical and antioxidant body systems of rabbits. Four groups of rabbits were randomly allocated as the control, the alloxan-induced diabetic, metformin-treated, and alloxan treated with metformin. The results revealed that alloxan leads to significant elevation in glucose (Glc) levels, malondialdehyde (MDA), low-density lipoprotein (LDL), very-low-density lipoprotein (VLDL), triglycerides (TGs), and total cholesterol (TCH), and a significant decline in high-density lipoprotein (HDL) and glutathione (GSH) as compared with the control group. Metformin alone caused a significant decline in Glc and HDL with significant elevation in LDL and MDA without significant changes in TCH, TGs, VLDL, and GSH. When metformin was offered as a treatment for alloxan-induced diabetic animals, it caused a significant decline in Glc, TCH, TGs, LDL, and VLDL levels with significant elevation in GSH and without a significant change in HDL and MDA. Metformin causes a decline in glucose levels due to its ability to decrease the use of substances hepatic cells use to create glucose and its ability to induce the enzymes participating in glucose oxidation.
Human Cytomegalovirus (HCMV) is a DNA virus of the Betaherpesvirinae subfamily and Herpesviridae family. HCMV is a leading cause of congenital infections throughout the world. This study was carried out in Kirkuk governorate from July 2017 to January 2018,aimed at studying there activity of anti-HCMV IgM to various specific HCMV antigens among 180 pregnant women attending hospitals, primary health care centers and some private medical laboratories. The pregnant women were examined for HCMV-IgM seroprevalence using Electro-chemo-luminescence(ECLIA) technique then examined their reactivity for specific HCMV antigens using line immune assay. The rates of HCMV-IgM seropositive were 22 (12.22 %). Regarding the reactivity of determined HCMV-IgM against various HCMV antigens, the rates 14 (63.63%), 13(59.09%), 21(95.45%), 15(68.18%), 21(95.45%) and 16(72.72%) were seropositive for HCMV IE1, CM2, p150, p65, gB1 and gB2 antigens, respectively. Concerning the band intensity of HCMV-IgM reactions with HCMV antigens, the rates of (+++) were higher than other band intensity for all antigens with highest rate for gB1 antigen (85.71%). So, the highest rate of HCMV-IgM reaction with the number of antigens was 40.90% for three antigens at the same time. In conclusion, the highest rate of HCMV-IgM in pregnant women was for gB1and p150 antigens; while the highest rate of intensity reaction was (+++)and the highest rate of HCMV-IgM ability for reaction was for three antigens at the same time.
The study aimed to find the relation between Covid-19 infection and reduction in vitamin-D levels andwith development of severe infection The study was conducted in Kirkuk city during July 2020, included120 COVID-19 patients who diagnosed by collecting of naso/oropharyngeal swabs and the virus RNAwas qualitatively detected by real-Time PCR in Public Health Laboratory according manufactureinstruction and WHO protocol. The study also included 30 healthy persons as control group. The studyincluded the collection of blood samples for determination of vitamin-D level (I-chroma, Korea) by directimmunofluorescence technique and according to manufacture instruction. The study also included collectionof associated information like age, sex, residence, BMI and by contacting with all patients daily until the10th day of infection to know their status after treatment. The study showed that, majority of patients wereaged from 22 to 41 years of old (P. value <0.001). The study showed that 62.5% of COVID-19 patientswere males compared with 37.5% females (P<0.05). The study showed that were asymptomatic, 44.17% ofcases of COVID-19 patients were with mild infection and 10% were with severe infection (P<0.001). Thestudy showed a significant relation between Covid-19 infection status with age as the highest mean of ageof Covid-19 infected patients was recorded in those who with severe infection. The study showed that thelowest mean of serum Vitamin was found in COVID-19 patients comparing with healthy control (12.8±3.6v.s. 29.3±3.1 ng/ml) (P: <0.001). The study also demonstrated that the level of vit. D was significantlyreduced in severe infected COVID-19 patients followed by patients with moderate infection and the highestmean was in patients with asymptomatic infection (P<0.001).
Background: CMV and EBV infections are a common cause of complications in patients with a variety of chronic diseases, and they are one of the most significant factors preventing patients from completing their treatment successfully. Aim of the study: The study's goal was to determine the frequency of EBV and CMV infections in patients receiving hemodialysis and how that frequency correlated with serum IL-6 levels. Patients and Methods: A cross sectional study was carried out in Kirkuk city from 15th of January 2021 to 15th of November 2021. A total of 87 hemodialysis patients and 33 healthy control group whose ages were between 30-75 years old. These patients admitted to Kirkuk General Hospital. An interview was carried out with these patients using questionnaire form designed by the investigator. Four ml of blood was collected from each person enrolled in this study for detection of specific EBV, and CMV IgM antibodies and Interleukin-6 by using ELISA technique.Results: The study showed that the highest rate of EBV-IgM Abs was occurred in hemodialysis patients (43.68%) comparing with the control group(9.09%), P<0.01. CMV –IgM was found 47.13% of HD patients and 21.21% of the control group, P<0.01.
