[1] The degradation of impact craters provides a powerful tool to analyze surface processes in the Martian past. Previous studies concluded that large impact craters (20-200 km in diameter) were strongly degraded by fluvial erosion during early Martian history. Our goal is to study the progression of crater degradation through time with a particular emphasis on the craters with alluvial fans and on the relative chronology of these craters. The geometric properties of 283 craters of >20 km in diameter were analyzed in two highlands of Mars, north of Hellas Planitia, and south of Margaritifer Terra, both known to contain craters with alluvial fans. Three classes were defined from morphology: strongly degraded craters with fluvial landforms and without ejecta (type I), gently degraded craters with fluvial landforms and preserved ejecta (type II), and fresh craters with ejecta and no fluvial landforms (type III). Our main result is that the type II craters that present alluvial fans have characteristics closer to fresh craters (type III) than degraded craters (type I). The distinctive degradation characteristics of these classes allowed us to determine a temporal distribution: Type I craters were formed and degraded between $4 Gyr and $3.7 Gyr and type II craters with alluvial fans were formed between Early Hesperian and Early Amazonian ($3.7 to $3.3 Gyr). This chronology is corroborated by crosscutting relationships of individual type II craters, which postdate Late Noachian valley networks. The sharp transition at $3.7 Gyr suggests a quick change in climatic conditions that could correspond to the cessation of the dynamo.
The Terra Sirenum region of Mars is thought to have hosted the Eridania paleolake during the Late Noachian/Early Hesperian, and it offers an insight into the regional aqueous history of Mars. We focus on four basins, including Atlantis, Simois, Caralis, and an unnamed basin. They are hypothesized to have hosted isolated lakes after the drainage of the Eridania Lake. We produced a geologic map and derived model absolute ages of our main mapped units. The map and model ages enable us to interpret the geologic history of the region. The basin floors are covered by light‐toned materials containing Fe/Mg‐phyllosilicates. Across most of the region, the Electris unit covers the highlands and is eroded into mesas. The deposition of this unit corresponds to air fall and/or fluvial mechanisms that transported the material into the basins and accumulated it on the plateaus and basin floors and rims. The deposits on the basin floors were later degraded into light‐toned knobs that are rich in Fe/Mg‐phyllosilicates. On the rim of the Simois and the unnamed basins, a sequence of Al‐phyllosilicates on top of Fe/Mg‐phyllosilicates has been observed. These Al‐phyllosilicate‐rich materials may have been formed by pedogenic leaching. The presence of chloride in the area suggests that a playa environment prevailed during the last stage of water presence or after desiccation of the lakes. In the Early Amazonian, the last aqueous activity cemented the postlacustrine air fall deposits in the basins and shows that liquid water was present in Terra Sirenum long after the Noachian.

Highlights Study of the morphological characteristics of an Amazonian-aged fluvial system. Hydraulic modelling based on high resolution topographic data. Evidence of high energy and short term event(s). Morphological evidence of surface run-off of snow/ice melt. Results imply recent climate changes during the Amazonian period. AbstractThe Martian climate throughout the Amazonian is widely believed to have been cold and hyper-arid, very similar to the current conditions. However, ubiquitous evidence of aqueous and glacial activity has been recently reported, including channels that can be tens to hundreds of kilometers long, alluvial and fluvial deposits, ice-rich mantles, and glacial and periglacial landforms. Here we study a ~340 km-long fluvial system located in the Terra Cimmeria region, in the southern mid-latitudes of Mars. The fluvial system is composed of an upstream catchment system with narrow glaciofluvial valleys and remnants of ice-rich deposits. We observe depositional features including fan-shaped deposits, and erosional features such as scour marks and streamlined islands. At the downstream section of this fluvial system is an outflow channel named Kārūn Valles, which displays a unique braided alluvial fan and terminates on the floor of the Ariadnes Colles basin. Our observations point to surface runoff of ice/snow melt as the water source for this fluvial activity. According to our crater sizefrequency distribution analysis the entire fluvial system formed during early to middle Amazonian, between Ga to Ma. Hydraulic modelling indicates that the Kārūn Valles and consequently the alluvial fan formation took place in geologically shortterm event(s). We conclude that liquid water was present in Terra Cimmeria during the early to middle Amazonian, and that Mars during that time may have undergone several episodic glacial-related events.
<p><strong>Introduction:&#160;</strong>ESA&#8217;s ExoMars rover will land in the&#160;Oxia&#160;Planum&#160;(OP)&#160;region [1,2], which&#160;was chosen for its ancient age, evidence for the sustained presence of water, the presence of layered deposits, and the potential for biosignature preservation [2]. While some of the geological characteristics have been studied in detail [3-5], other aspects are less well understood.&#160;In particular, it&#160;is unclear if the situation in&#160;OP&#160;is a unique one, or if the geologic setting is representative&#160;for Mars&#160;on a regional, or even&#160;a&#160;global scale. Specifically, the stratigraphic relationship of the geologic units&#160;in&#160;OP&#160;to the nearby ancient impact basin,&#160;Chryse&#160;Planitia, requires further study. For example, a&#160;&#187;bathtub&#171;-like ring of Fe/Mg-rich phyllosilicates around&#160;Chryse&#160;[6] may indicate that the phyllosilicates at&#160;OP&#160;reflect aqueous processes that operated in a specific context at basin-scale.&#160;&#160;</p> <p>To test the hypothesis that&#160;OP&#160;is representative for a circum-Chryse&#160;geologic setting, we selected&#160;a site in northern&#160;Xanthe&#160;Terra&#160;(XT)&#160;(~9-13.5&#176;N/315-318.5&#176;E; Fig. 1) to investigate key geologic features and compare them to&#160;OP. This site displays several characteristics&#160;similar to&#160;OP, making it a suitable reference site: The presence of phyllosilicates [7], the proximity to fluvial features [8-10], and the abundance of remnant buttes that are indicative of widespread erosional processes [11]. Here we present preliminary results of our mapping and geologic analysis.&#160;</p> <p><strong>Preliminary&#160;Results&#160;and Discussion:</strong>&#160;The study area is approximately 225&#160;&#215;&#160;190 km&#160;in size.&#160;The&#160;general&#160;elevation&#160;increases in height&#160;from&#160;north to south&#160;from&#160;approximately&#160;-2,960&#160;m
