The aim of this study was to elucidate the effects of an ischemic stroke on the amplitude and latency of the P300 wave and evaluate their changes over a prospective 1-year follow-up period. We recorded the P300 wave using an auditory oddball paradigm in 60 consecutive brain infarct patients at baseline (i.e., within 4 weeks after the stroke), after 3 months, after 12 months and in 30 healthy control subjects. The P300 latencies in stroke patients were significantly longer and the P300 amplitudes were significantly smaller than those of the control group. The latency of P300 showed a highly significant average improvement 12 months after the stroke compared to the baseline. There was no significant change observed for the P300 amplitude during the same period. The P3 latency is initially more increased in the patients with hemispheric brain infarction but shows a better recovery compared to the patients with brainstem infarction. Also, the results of the P300 latency of patients with the left-sided lesions was significantly longer compared to the patients with right-sided lesions on the beginning of the study but not 3 and 12 months after the stroke. The results of our study show the importance of P300 event-related potentials in the detection and follow-up of cognitive changes after ischemic stroke.
Aging does not induce changes in size and surface of neurons in the ganglia, but it decreases the number of neurons. The nerve structures in the elderly are partly emptied of bodies of nerve cells ("empty ganglions"), which indicates the existence of changed myenteric ganglia in the duodenum. These changes could be related to the duodenum motility disorder associated with aging.
Increase in the number of mast cells in the infected gingiva can be correlated with an increased influx of inflammatory cells from blood circulation into the gingival stroma, as well as with the collagen lysis, since these cells produce substances with collagenolytic potential. Based on the distribution of mast cells, it could be concluded that in the evolution of periodontal disease there are significant dynamic alterations in migration and localization of these cells.
Background/Aim. Neuroendocrine (NE) cells are one of the epithelial populations in the prostate. It is well-known that the focal neuroendocrine differentiation (FNED) in prostate cancer (PC) is an aggressive subtype that most commonly evolves from preexisting PC which does not respond to hormone therapy (androgen independed PC). The incidence and clinical importance of FNED in PC is not clearly understood because of conflicting results in the studies, and evaluation of FNED is not routinely performed in clinical practice. The aim of the present study is to determine the importance of FNED presence in the examined prostate changes with special reference to the relationship of FNED degree in PC with some parameters of predictive value [Gleason score, preoperative serum total prostata specific antigen (PSA) value, tumor volume and tumor stage]. Methods. The study included the biopsy material from 100 untreated consecutive prostate pathological changes: 70 PC, 20 prostatic intraepithelial neoplasia (PIN) and 10 benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). The patients with PIN and BPH were the control groups. A block containing part of
Background: Due to its deep penetration into the dermis, ultraviolet A (UVA) radiation is considered a primary factor in skin photoageing. The aim of this study is to use a qualitative and quantitative analysis to determine the structural parameters of skin photoageing in mice exposed to UVA radiation, with or without the application of a photoprotective cream. Materials and methods: The experiment consisted of the radiation of female BALBc mice in a solarium by UVA rays, up to total dosages of 7800 J/cm 2 and 12500 J/cm 2 . A total of 78 animals were divided into four experimental and two control groups. All animals were shaved and the animals in two experimental groups were treated with a photoprotective cream half an hour before exposure. The samples of the treated skin were stained with haematoxylin-eosin and Van-Gieson staining methods. All measurements, except for the presence of dyskeratosis, were taken using ImageJ 150i software. Results: In the study, the signs of skin photoageing were more evident in untreated groups of animals. Dyskeratosis was more frequent in both of the untreated groups of animals (p = 0.004 and p = 0.003). The lowest values of epidermal thickness (13.8 ± 2.6 μm and 12.7 ± 2.3 μm) were present in both of the untreated groups of animals (p < 0.001 and p < 0.001). The highest values of stratum corneum thickness (34.3 ± 8.5 μm) were observed in the untreated, shorter radiated group of animals (p < 0.001) which was irradiated for the shortest period of time. Beside the control groups, the highest length of dermo-epidermal junction was recorded in the group of treated, longer radiated animals (1467.6 ± 94.6 μm; p = 0.373). The lowest values of dermal thickness (115.9 ± 10.5 μm and 134.8 ± 21.8 μm) and volumetric density of the collagen fibres (31.92 ± 3.19% and 29.40 ± 4.54%) were present in both untreated groups of animals (p < 0.001, p < 0.001, p = 0.035). Conclusions: Skin photoageing was most pronounced in the groups of animals irradiated without the application of photoprotective cream.
