Summary
Between Occupational Loyalty and Occupational Change -A comparative analysis of primary teachers' careers (Bern, Switzerland)In a retrospective survey of four cohorts (1963-65, 1973-75, 1983-85 and 1993-95) of graduates of teaching for primary eduation in Bern, Switzerland, data on professional mobility and current occupation was collated. Five career-types could be identified on the basis of level of employment and a chronology of professional developmentnon-entry, continuance, reduction, exit and reentry. These can be described on the basis of occupational stress, motivational attitude and jobsatisfaction. More than half of the respondents no longer work as primary teachers, although few have left the profession all together. The results show a much more positive picture of professional careers of teachers than previous research, which has mostly focussed on 'survivors' in the teaching profession. It is remarkable that a strong determinant of careers in female teachers are traditional gender-bound roles and this, indeed, across all investigated cohorts.
