The drainage of the north side of the Lötschberg Base Tunnel in the Bernese Oberland in Switzerland continuously produces about 100 litres of water per second at about 20 °C. This water is discharged into the local river Kander. In order to protect wetland areas and water rights, the responsible authorities imposed limitations on the quantity of drainage from the tunnel. At the same time, the warming of the Kander by the discharged groundwater has to be limited to 0.5 °C to protect the lake trout from the Thunersee lake, which swim up the Kander to spawn. Particularly in the cold winter months when the water flow in the Kander is low, this requires the withdrawal of about 4 MW of thermal energy, or the cooling of the groundwater by about 10 °C. Instead of artificial cooling, the Tropenhaus Frutigen in combination with a local heating network exploits the warm groundwater for sturgeon farming together with tropical green houses. A high added value is achieved through sustainable use with polycultures, closed circulations and the use of alternative energies. The project has aroused great interest nationally and internationally.
Design and construction of a semi‐integral railway overpass using the “rolled steel girders in concrete” (WiB) construction method The existing railway overpass “Großenhainer Straße” in Dresden, built in 1898/99, does not comply to the latest requirements. The structure will be replaced by a modern three‐span‐bridge in “rolled steel girders in concrete” (WiB) construction method with two superstructures with double track lines. During construction the rail traffic, motor vehicles and tramway will be continuously in service. With respect to the present boundary conditions, the structure represents an innovative and extremely ambitious engineering task. Due to the sensitive urban environment, ambitious visual design requirements have to be fulfilled. The new railway bridge “Großenhainer Straße” is an outstanding structure in respect of architectural and technical design as well as functionality.
Schlüsselwörter: Berufliche Mobilität; Beanspruchung; Berufszufriedenheit; Lehrerbiographie Summary Between Occupational Loyalty and Occupational Change -A comparative analysis of primary teachers' careers (Bern, Switzerland)In a retrospective survey of four cohorts (1963-65, 1973-75, 1983-85 and 1993-95) of graduates of teaching for primary eduation in Bern, Switzerland, data on professional mobility and current occupation was collated. Five career-types could be identified on the basis of level of employment and a chronology of professional developmentnon-entry, continuance, reduction, exit and reentry. These can be described on the basis of occupational stress, motivational attitude and jobsatisfaction. More than half of the respondents no longer work as primary teachers, although few have left the profession all together. The results show a much more positive picture of professional careers of teachers than previous research, which has mostly focussed on 'survivors' in the teaching profession. It is remarkable that a strong determinant of careers in female teachers are traditional gender-bound roles and this, indeed, across all investigated cohorts.
