In arid and semiarid lands around the world, vegetation is distributed in patches within a bare soil matrix. Vegetation in the North-east Patagonian Monte, Argentina is a shrubland steppe, and patches are dominated by shrubs, with grasses, forbs and cryptogams under their canopy. It was hypothesised that grazing increases patchiness; and fires and wind erosion homogenise the distribution of vegetation. It was predicted that there would be: (1) greater cover, specific frequency and richness of shrubs in grazed sites; (2) greater cover, specific frequency and richness of herbs and preferred grasses in ungrazed sites; and (3) a random pattern of distribution in burnt areas. Aerial cover of all perennial species was measured at six sites with different land-use histories: heavily grazed, medium grazed, ungrazed, long exclosure from grazing followed by grazing, burnt and then ungrazed, and burnt and then grazed. Species were grouped into five functional types: shrubs, sub-shrubs, preferred grasses, non-preferred grasses and forbs. The results showed significant differences in the cover of preferred and non-preferred grasses, forbs and total cover with previous grazing but there was no evidence of shrub encroachment. Species frequency and richness decreased especially with increased grazing intensity. The pattern of spatial distribution changed from aggregated in grazed sites to random in ungrazed and burnt sites for all plant functional types. At the population level, the cover of the grass, Poa ligularis, was greatest on ungrazed sites whereas the cover of the shrub, Chuquiraga erinacea, was greatest on burnt sites. It is concluded that, after applying a heterogeneous patchwork of disturbance, such as grazing, or with fire, followed by periods of rest, the plant diversity is increased.
Carlos Luis Spe^azzini (1858â€"1926 was a leading figure in Argentinian natural history, mainly recognized for his mycological and vascular plant studies. Information concerning Spegazzini's travels and his botanical work focusing on vascular plants, including his specimens and publications, is provided. The collecting expeditions of Spegazzini and collaborators in Argentina are summarized. The identification of his typic and non-typic materials is frequently complicated by the lack or sparcity of label information. Spegazzini published ca. 100 papers on vascular plants, mostly in Argentinian journals, describing ca. 1000 new taxa. A list of the new^ genera, species, and infraspecific taxa described by Spegazzini is provided. Spegazzini was professor at the University of La Plata and Buenos Aires in Argentina, curator of the herbarium of the National Department of Agricultun% first head of the herbarium of Museo de La Plata, and founder of an arboretum and an institute of mycology in La Plata city.
In 1973, Verdcourt made the combination in Myriophyllum L.: M. aquaticum (Vellozo) Verdcourt based on Enydria aquatica Vellozo in the Haloragaceae. However, significant morphological differences exist between the study of the Vellozo 1825 protologue and the Vellozo 1831 plate of E. aquatica. Therefore, we propose the designation of an epitype to better fix the taxonomic application of the name M. aquaticum (Vellozo) Verdcourt.RESUMEN .
The quantification of carbon storage in vegetation biomass is a crucial factor in the estimation and mitigation of CO 2 emissions. Globally, arid and semi-arid regions are considered an important carbon sink. However, they have received limited attention and, therefore, it should be a priority to develop tools to quantify biomass at the local and regional scales. Individual plant variables, such as stem diameter and crown area, were reported to be good predictors of individual plant weight. Stand-level variables, such as plant cover and mean height, are also easy-to-measure estimators of above-ground biomass (AGB) in dry regions. In this study, we estimated the AGB in semi-arid woody vegetation in Northeast Patagonia, Argentina. We evaluated whether the AGB at the stand level can be estimated based on plant cover and to what extent the estimation accuracy can be improved by the inclusion of other field-measured structure variables. We also evaluated whether remote sensing technologies can be used to reliably estimate and map the regional mean biomass. For this purpose, we analyzed the relationships between field-measured woody vegetation structure variables and AGB as well as LANDSAT TM-derived variables. We obtained a modelbased ratio estimate of regional mean AGB and its standard error. Total plant cover allowed us to obtain a reliable estimation of local AGB, and no better fit was attained by the inclusion of other structure variables. The stand-level plant cover ranged between 18.7% and 95.2% and AGB between about 2.0 and 70.8 Mg/hm 2 . AGB based on total plant cover was well estimated from LANDSAT TM bands 2 and 3, which facilitated a model-based ratio estimate of the regional mean AGB (approximately 12.0 Mg/hm 2 ) and its sampling error (about 30.0%). The mean AGB of woody vegetation can greatly contribute to carbon storage in semi-arid lands. Thus, plant cover estimation by remote sensing images could be used to obtain regional estimates and map biomass, as well as to assess and monitor the impact of land-use change on the carbon balance, for arid and semi-arid regions.
