Combined effects of climate change and deforestation have altered precipitation patterns in the Amazon. This has led to changes in the frequency of extreme events of flood and drought in recent decades and in the magnitude of the annual flood pulse, a phenomenon that influences virtually all aspects of river-floodplain ecosystem dynamics. Analysis of long-term data revealed abrupt and synchronous changes in hydrology and fish assemblage structure of a floodplain lake near the confluence of Amazon and Negro rivers. After an intense drought in 2005, the assemblage assumed a different and fairly persistent taxonomic composition and functional structure. Declines in abundance after 2005 were more pronounced for species of all sizes having equilibrium life history strategy, large species with periodic life history strategy, and for all trophic levels except primary consumers. Our results suggest that the extreme drought triggered changes in the fish assemblage and subsequent anomalous hydrological conditions have hampered assemblage recovery. These findings stress the need to account for climatic-driven hydrological changes in conservation efforts addressing aquatic biodiversity and fishery resources in the central Amazon.

The temporal effect of discharge and limnology on fish composition and species diversity in a floodplain lake at the confluence of the Amazon and Negro Rivers was evaluated. Species richness, abundance and assemblage composition were strongly influenced by seasonal discharge of the Amazon and Negro Rivers, which affects lateral connectivity, water conductivity and temperature. As a consequence, temporal β-diversity was high in the lake and the assemblage was dominated by seasonally transient species. Relatively large species known to feed on resources within the floodplain were captured almost exclusively during the flood period. During the dry season, the assemblage was dominated by fishes adapted to harsh conditions of high temperature and low dissolved oxygen concentrations. An open system with high spatial and temporal heterogeneity created by the meeting of two large rivers with different water chemistry, Lago Catalão has a dynamic fish assemblage. Given its high temporal β-diversity and abundance of fishes, many of great importance in local fisheries, Lago Catalão and other floodplain lakes in this region merit special attention for conservation.

A variação periódica do nível das águas é o principal fator que determina a comunidade de organismos aquáticos presente em rios com planícies alagadas. Muitos estudos na Amazônia são desenvolvidos nas várzeas próximas à cidade de Manaus, mas, comparações entre essas informações são dificultadas pela ausência de padronização na denominação das diferentes etapas do ciclo de cheia-seca. Este trabalho teve como objetivo a identificação e a padronização da nomenclatura das diferentes fases do ciclo hidrológico para possibilitar análises que envolvam resultados de mais de um ano e de mais de um local. Os dados do nível da água do rio Negro, coletados no porto de Manaus foram utilizados para o desenvolvimento da metodologia. São propostos valores da cota do rio Negro para limitar os quatro períodos hidrológicos (enchente, cheia, vazante e seca) e definir a intensidade da cheia e da seca. O número de dias de cada um dos períodos hidrológicos foi obtido e foi estimada a duração para períodos considerados típicos, longos e curtos. Considerando que modificações abióticas e bióticas do meio estão relacionadas com as mudanças no nível da água, a identificação e a padronização da nomenclatura dos períodos hidrológicos mostraram-se extremamente úteis para uma primeira análise de informações biológicas dos organismos da várzea. Aim Evaluating how groups of organisms vary in dispersal capability and how environmental, spatial and temporal signals vary across multiple scales is critical to elucidating metacommunity theory. We examined whether the relative contributions of environmental, spatial and hydrological factors have different effects on organismal groups with different dispersal abilities at three spatial scales, and how this knowledge contributes to our understanding of metacommunity dynamics. Location Four major Brazilian floodplains, with the largest distance among them of 2,300 Km. Taxon 10 aquatic organismal groups, ranging from bacterioplankton to fish. Methods We sampled lakes connected to the main river in the low‐ and high‐water periods of each floodplain between 2011 and 2012. Different biological groups were analysed across three hierarchical spatial scales (fine, intermediate and subcontinental) within and between floodplain systems. We applied a series of partial redundancy analyses to estimate the relative contributions of environmental factors, spatial factors and hydrological period for each biological group. Results At the fine spatial scale, predominantly environmental factors and hydrological period structure metacommunities, although less so for microorganisms than for micro‐invertebrates and macro‐organisms. The relative importance of environmental factors increased at the intermediate spatial scale. At the subcontinental scale, the relative importance of spatial factors increased for all biological groups, but environmental factors remained the primary regulators of microorganisms even at the largest scale. Main conclusions This study design allowed us to make more robust inferences about the mechanisms responsible for regulating community structure of distinct biological groups at different spatial scales. Our results suggest that biological groups displaying distinct body size likely determine the spatial extent at which environmental, spatial and hydrological processes prevail as the primary regulators of community structure. These findings are important in guiding the conservation and management of floodplain biodiversity because these systems are naturally highly heterogeneous in space and time.

The cichlid Mesonauta festivus is common and abundant among macrophyte stands along a large geographical range of the Amazonas and Paraná-Paraguay basins, in South America. This broad geographical range highlights the species' dispersion ability, which can be attributed to specific biological and behavioral traits. However, the dispersion ability does not account for the broad geographical range alone, as the species must be able to establish populations in a range of environments, which include marginal areas of large rivers with different water types, floodplain lakes, and small terra-firme streams. In this work we investigated the specie's ecology, biological traits and behavior in order to understand what and how its traits may have allowed it to attain such broad geographical range and aid in establishing local populations. Regarding its dispersion ability we stress the capability of swimming in the pelagic region, which is remarkable for this species and uncommon among Neotropical cichlids. Its vagility is high even when juveniles are under parental care. Regarding population establishment, the high environmental tolerance stands out, allowing the species to live under strikingly different abiotic conditions. In addition, the small size of first sexual maturation and its capability of spawning along the whole hydrologic cycle (apparently not associated to a specific environmental cue) may also facilitate the establishment of populations into new environments. Moreover, the behavior of mimicking dead leaves, which is mainly performed by juveniles, may lessen predation pressures. Under an ecoevolutionary perspective, the traits highlighted in this work may buffer selective pressures experienced by populations in different biotic and/or abiotic conditions, which may also favor the increasing of the geographical range by allowing the evolutionary lineage to remain similar even in disconnected and/or striking different environments.

This study aimed to estimate age and growth of the peacock bass Cichla temensis from the rio Negro (Brazilian Amazonia) by analyzing scale annuli. Specimens were captured between October 2011 and September 2012 in the main channel of the river and in adjacent lakes in the municipality of Barcelos, AM, Brazil. Six growth checks were identified on the scales of specimens. The annual variation in body condition observed suggests that fat is accumulated during the dry season. Results for the GSI (gonadosomatic index) showed that peak reproduction occurred in the receding-water period, indicating that the fish had energy deficiencies as a result of reproductive activity. RMI (relative marginal increment) analysis revealed that an annulus is formed once a year during the receding-water period. The population parameters estimated were L50 (length at sexual maturity) = 31.11 cm, L∞ (asymptotic length) = 68.05 cm, k (growth coefficient) = 0.20.year-1 and A0.95 (longevity) = 14 years. Our results corroborate the validity of using growth rings in scales as indicators to estimate the age and growth rate of Cichla temensis in the middle rio Negro.

The goliath catfish Brachyplatystoma rousseauxii has crucial economical and ecological functions in the Amazon basin. Although its life history characteristics have been studied in the Amazon, there is little information in the Madeira River basin, which holds genetically distinct populations and where dams were recently built. Using fish collected in Bolivia, Brazil and Peru, this study provides a validation of growth rings deposition and details the growth patterns of B. rousseauxii in the Madeira before the dams’ construction. Age structure and growth parameters were determined from 497 otolith readings. The species exhibits two growth rings per year and sampled fish were between 0 and 16 years old. In the Brazilian portion of the basin, mainly young individuals below 5 years old were found, whereas older fish (> 5 years) were caught only in the Bolivian and Peruvian stretches, indicating that after migrating upstream to reproduce, adults remain in the headwaters of the Madeira River. Comparing with previous publications, B. rousseauxii had a slower growth and 20 cm lower maximum standard length in the Madeira River than in the Amazon River. This study provides a baseline for future evaluation of changes in population dynamics of the species following dams closure.

Abstract:The Parque Estadual do Cantão is a protected area in the Araguaia River. In a survey carried out during a complete hydrological cycle, 271 species of fish, belonging to 183 genera, 41 families and 12 orders were captured. Characidae was the most diverse family with 89 species (32.6% of the total), followed by Loricariidae with 23 species (8.4%) and Cichlidae with 21 species (7.7%), ten families were represented by only one species. The results showed that the PE Cantão is an area with high diversity of fish species, and that the assemblies are still well preserved, so the existence and maintenance of this Park is of high interest for the preservation of the Araguaia River fish fauna. Em um inventário realizado durante um ciclo hidrológico completo, foram capturadas 271 espécies de peixes, pertencentes a 183 gêneros, 41 famílias e 12 ordens. Characidae foi a família mais diversa com 89 espécies (32,6% do total), seguida por Loricariidae com 23 espécies (8,4%) e Cichlidae com 21 espécies (7,7%), dez famílias foram representadas por uma única espécie. Os resultados mostraram que o PE Cantão é uma área com alta diversidade de espécies de peixes, e que as assembleias ainda estão bem preservadas, de modo que a existência e manutenção deste Parque é de alto interesse para a preservação da fauna de peixes do rio Araguaia.
