Microhabitat selection and co-occurrence of Pachistopelma rufonigrum Pocock (Theraphosidae) and Nothroctenus fuxico sp. nov. (Ctenidae), in tank bromeliads were investigated. Thermal conditions, inside and outside the plants, were measured in order to verify if the temperature of the water that accumulates inside the plant affects the behavior of these species. Measurements of foliar parameters were taken in order to evaluate if and how plant structure affects spider abundance and microhabitat selection. Apparently, differences in plant structure do not affect either spider abundance or microhabitat selection. No microhabitat preference was observed and co-ocurrence of both species was a random event. In addition, notes on the distribution range of P. rufonigrum and the description of N. fuxico sp. nov. from State of Sergipe, Brazil are presented.
Foram estudadas a seleção de microhabitat e co-ocorrência de Pachistopelma rufonigrum Pocock (Theraphosidae) e Nothroctenus fuxico sp. nov. (Ctenidae) em bromélias-tanque. A condição da temperatura dentro e fora das plantas foi medida para verificar se a temperatura da água acumulada dentro da bromélia afeta algum aspecto comportamental das aranhas que ali vivem. Medidas dos parâmetros foliares foram realizadas para avaliar se a estrutura das plantas chega a afetar a abundância ou a seleção de microhabitat dessas aranhas. Aparentemente, as diferenças na estrutura das duas espécies de bromélias estudadas não afetam nem a abundância, nem a seleção de microhabitat de P. rufonigrum e N. fuxico sp. nov. A preferência e co-ocorrência de ambas as espécies de aranhas parece ser um evento ao acaso. Adicionalmente, apresenta-se notas sobre os limites de distribuição de P. rufonigrum e descreve-se N. fuxico sp. nov. do Estado de Sergipe, Brasil

RESUMO. Neste trabalho são apresentados breves aspectos teóricos e práticos relativos ao estudo da diversidade e da riqueza de espécies destinadas aos estudantes de graduação. Questões relativas ao delineamento da pesquisa, à coleta e as análises dos dados são apresentadas e discutidas, brevemente, além de modelos de distribuição de abundância, índices de diversidade e estimadores de riqueza acompanhados de referências da literatura sobre o tema. Objetiva-se mostrar aos alunos, os reveses relativos ao uso inadequado de análises sobre os componentes da diversidade de espécies, aplicados a um conjunto de dados.Palavras-chave: modelos de abundância de espécies; índices de diversidade; estimadores de riqueza.ABSTRACT. Designing diversity and richness studies: an approach to undergraduate students. Aspects of theory and practice related to studies on species richness and diversity measurement are presented to Biology Sciences undergraduate students. Questions concerning the designing of the research, data collecting and analysis are presented. Models of relative abundance distribution, diversity indices and estimators of species richness are briefly discussed, followed by bibliographic references on the theme. IntroduçãoDesde muito tempo, os biólogos tentam quantificar a diversidade de formas de vida no planeta. O método mais lógico para isso era uma simples contagem de quantos e quais organismos vivem em uma área. Nas primeiras décadas do século XX, alguns naturalistas tentaram (e conseguiram!) propor métodos para medir a abundância e a riqueza de uma área, através de metodologias que envolviam critérios aritméticos (passíveis de análises estatísticas mais rigorosas, que dessem bojo aos resultados obtidos). Hoje em dia, as análises de riqueza e de diversidade estão muito em moda e difundidas entre a comunidade científica (Carvalho 1997; Moreno 2001;Santos 2003). Praticamente todas as políticas públicas e não-governamentais de projetos conservacionistas utilizam medidas de diversidade e de riqueza para apoiar os dados que subsidiarão as verbas destinadas à medidas de preservação ambiental ou mesmo de espécies, animais ou vegetais.A primeira fase da pesquisa sobre diversidade começa na mesa do laboratório com muitos livros, artigos e pesquisa sobre o assunto. Apesar de ser exaustiva e exigir muita dedicação para leituras (a maioria em língua inglesa), essa fase (que muitos chamam de delineamento experimental) é a mais importante de toda a pesquisa científica (Brower et al., 1997; Vilar e Carvalho 2003). Nela o pesquisador delineia todas as partes da metodologia que ele aplicará em campo e em laboratório. ABSTRACT. Aspects of the behavior of the theraphosid spider Pachistopelma rufonigrum, in two species of tank bromeliads in an area with white sands in the Serra de Itabaiana, Sergipe, Brazil, are described. Observations on habitat, microhabitat, foraging, ecdysis and reproduction, were made. Our data suggested that P. rufonigrum inhabits only these species of bromeliads, since all stages of the life cycle were observed in the plant. The relationships degrees between P. rufonigrum and the species of studied tank bromeliads are discussed.

Species richness and forest seasonality of spiders in an urban fragment of Northeastern Brazil were investigated. Mata do Buraquinho is a remnant of Atlantic Rain Forest where no spider inventories have ever been made. Samplings during dry and wet seasons were carried out in order to establish if seasonality influences species richness and complementarily of the spider fauna. Pitfall traps, nocturnal collections, and beating tray samples were used to access a multi-guild spider fauna. Spider species were estimated using first order Jackknife method. Four hundred samples were obtained, resulting in 1681 adult spiders. A total of 166 species were recorded and 211 were estimated. No significant differences for species richness were observed between both periods, and the captured species were the same according to the complementarily coefficients. The fragmentation hypothesis as factor of biota impoverishment was not tested, but future investigations on this topic are suggested in the complex of forest remnants in João Pessoa.

We investigated microhabitat selection in the Amazonian whip spider Heterophrynus longicornis (Butler 1973). The probability of finding individuals of this species increased according to the diameter of the trees. Moreover, there was a positive correlation between the size of adult individuals and the diameter of the trees on which they were found. Our results also provide quantitative support for a previous suggestion that H. longicornis prefers large trees bearing buttresses and burrows at the base where the individuals hide during daytime. Since whip spiders prefer large trees, the anthropogenic disturbance promoted by selective logging or the degeneration of the forest structure due to fragmentation and edge effect may have a negative effect on the spatial distribution and, consequently, on the density and population ecology of H. longicornis.
