Most foreign bodies pass through the gastrointestinal tract uneventfully. The majority of the reported literature describes the management of ingested blunt objects. However, ingestion of sharp objects can still occur with a higher rate of perforation corresponding to treatment dilemmas. We report a case of inadvertently ingested sharp foreign body by a special child, which was retrieved by endoscopic guided forceps. Urgent endoscopic assessment and retrieval of recently ingested sharp dental foreign body is indicated and routine use of preventive measures such as rubber dam, gauze throat screens or floss ligatures is suggested.
Gingival enlargement is quite a common pathology in pediatric patients and may be inflammatory, noninflammatory, or a combination of both. Idiopathic gingival fibromatosis, although rare, is a slowly progressive benign enlargement that affects the marginal gingiva, attached gingival, and interdental papilla. The fibromatosis may potentially cover the exposed tooth surfaces, causing esthetic and functional problems. The treatment of gingival fibromatosis is essential because it causes difficulties with mastication, speech problems, mispositioning of teeth, esthetic effects, and psychological difficulties for the patient. Traditional gingivectomy procedures have been a challenge for dentists who confront issues of patient cooperation and discomfort. In the last decade, laser procedures in oral cavity had shown many optimum effects in both hard and soft tissue procedures. Laser soft-tissue surgery has been shown to be well accepted by children. The following case report describes a laser-assisted gingivectomy procedure performed on a 13-year-old female.
The cemento-ossifying fibroma is classified as a fibro-osseous lesion of the jaws. It commonly presents as a progressively growing lesion that can attain an enormous size with resultant deformity if left untreated. The cemento-ossifying fibroma is a central neoplasm of bone as well as periodontium which has caused considerable controversy because of controversy regarding terminology and the criteria for its diagnosis. This case report describes a female patient with cemento-ossifying fibroma involving maxillary antrum. The clinical, radiographic and histological features as well as the surgical findings are presented.
Gingival enlargement or overgrowth is a common disease of gingiva. The causative factors may range from inflammation due to local factors to conditioned enlargement and neoplastic enlargements. They commonly present as bulbous interdental gingival, diffuse swelling of gingival. Due to the unaesthetic appearance of the overgrown gingiva, treatment becomes inevitable. This results in excision of overgrowth known as gingivectomy. The first gingivectomy procedure was explained by Robicsek in 1884 and later by Zentler (1918). Grant (1979) defined gingivectomy as excision of soft tissue wall of pathologic periodontal pocket. Gingivectomy procedures can be done by means of scalpel, laser, electrosurgery and chemosurgery. The ultimate result remains the same indifferent of the method used. However the amount of remaining keratinized gingival and esthetic appearance is of supreme importance.
Congenital afibrinogenemia is a rare coagulation disorder, with an estimated prevalence of 1 : 1,000,000, characterized by a complete absence to reduced level of circulating fibrinogen. This article presents a case of congenital afibrinogenemia, which presented as cellulitis on the face.
Introduction: Regeneration of periodontium is always difficult to achieve regardless of all advancement. In an attempt to refine, various materials have been tried and tested. The present study was carried out to evaluate regenerative potential of easy-graft CRYSTAL in intrabony defects, clinically, and radiographically.
Methods: This randomised split-mouth study was conducted at Rungta College of Dental Sciences and Research from 2015 October to 2015 October. Intrabony pockets more than 5 mm and radiographic evidence of vertical bone loss were selected from 15 patients having two sites each. The chosen sites were randomly divided into test sites: open flap debridement (OFD) with easy-graft CRYSTAL and control sites (OFD). The clinical parameters evaluated were Plaque Index, Gingival Index, Probing Pocket Depth, Relative Attachment Level, and Gingival Recession at baseline, three months, and six months postoperatively. Radiographic parameters recorded were Defect Fill and Percentage of Defect Fill at baseline, three months, and six months. Data were analysed in SPSS v.20.
Results: At six months, improved clinical and radiographic values were obtained compared to baseline. The plaque and gingival index showed statistically significant reduction. Both groups showed statistically significant reduction in mean probing pocket depth and gain in relative attachment level. Mean gingival recession score was increased in both the group but was not significant. There was significant increase in Defect Fill and Percentage of Defect fill in both groups with better bone fill in test group.
Conclusion: Easy-graft CRYSTAL is a potential regenerative material for the treatment of periodontal intrabony defects.
