Background: Aims and objectives of the study was to study the incidence of H. pylori infection in our Hospital. To find out the sensitivity and specificity of rapid urease test (RUT) and histopathological examination for the detection of H. pylori on gastric biopsy. To study the effect of anti H. pylori drugs by performing follow-up endoscopy in terms of positive or negative Rapid Urease Test and Histopathological Examination report. Methods: The study was conducted at Dr. D. Y. Patil Medical College and Hospital, DPU University, for a period of 2 years (from July 2012-September 2014) and is a prospective and comparative randomized type of study using 100 patients. The study was approved by the Institute’s Ethics Committee. Results: Data analysis showed that: In our study 84 patients (84%) were detected positive by RUT method. In our study 83 patients (83 %) were detected positive by HPE method. There was an association between RUT and HPE finding in study group with the sensitivity being 96.38 % and specificity being 74.47 %, PPV was 95.24% and NPV was 81.25%. At the time of follow up after taking anti H pylori treatment, 79 patients were RUT negative and 8 were RUT positive who were defaulters (not taken complete dose) and again started on treatment with the accuracy of the drug being 98.85 %. At the time of follow up after taking anti H pylori treatment 78 patients were HPE negative and 9 were HPE positive who were defaulters (not taken complete dose) and again started on treatment. There was an association between RUT and HPE finding at follow up with the sensitivity being 88.89 % and specificity being 100%, PPV was 100% and NPV was 98.73%.Conclusions: Our study reveals that RUT is accurate for the diagnosis of H. pylori infection and its use will serve as a good alternative to histology in management of patients with dyspepsia in resource poor environments, except in patients who need histology for reasons other than H. pylori diagnosis.
Background: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness and rate of healing of Aloe vera gel in treatment of chronic wounds, to compare the effectiveness of Aloe vera gel with conventional dressing (normal saline and povidone iodine) and to assess the percentage reduction of wound healing with Aloe vera gel dressing. Methods: The study was conducted at Dr. D. Y. Patil Medical College and Hospital, DPU University, for a period of 2 months (from January 2017 to March 2017) and is a prospective and comparative randomized type of study using 50 cases (Group A and Group B, 25 each). The study was approved by the Institute’s Ethics Committee. Results: Data analysis showed that at the end of 4 weeks, mean surface area in Group A is reduced to 4.58 cm2 from 9.79 cm2 which is higher than that in the control group. Also, the average rate of healing in Aloe vera gel is more than control group. Percentage reduction in ulcer surface area was calculated to be much more in Group A as compared to Group B.Conclusions: The study concluded that Aloe vera gel is highly effective in treatment of chronic ulcers and stimulates the growth of wound healing. Thus, reducing the hospital stay. Apart from being efficacious in wound healing, Aloe vera gel is safe product. No allergic reactions/infections were associated with Aloe vera gel. Aloe vera gel not only heals faster but is also cost effective.
Background: Aims and objective of the study was to study the association of H. Pylori infection and cholelithiasis. Methods: The study was conducted at Dr. D. Y. Patil Medical College and Hospital, DPU University, for a period of 2 years and is a descriptive cross-sectional type of study using 100 patients. Results: In this study 26 % of total patients were seen in the age group of 21-30 years. The mean age of the patients was 26 years. 78 patients in present study were male (78%) and only 22 were females (22%) male predominance was seen. male to female ratio is 3.5:1. 18 % patients show association with cholelithiasis and 84 patients were detected positive by RUT method. Conclusions: H. pylori infection has a positive association with cholelithiasis and if eradicated, may lead to prevention of gallstones.
Objectives: To discern the degree of awareness amongst the primary health care physicians about the fact that cyanide poisoning is a possible consequence of fire accidents. Methods: Using an anonymous questionnaire, thirty allopath primary health care physicians were tested for awareness of acute cyanide poisoning being a possible consequence of fire accidents. Results: Only one (3%) of the physicians was aware of the possibility of acute cyanide poisoning due to fire accidents. Conclusions: We report dismal awareness among the primary health care physicians. Medical education curriculum must cater for emerging healthcare issues.
