EVALUATION OF WHEAT SEED VIGOR BY THE ACCELERATED AGING AND COLD TESTSABSTRACT -This research was performed to study procedures for the accelerated aging and cold tests and to verify the efficiency of these tests to evaluate wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) seed vigor. Cold tests, with and without soil, and accelerated aging (traditional and saturated salt) were carried out, in wheat seeds 'IAC-350' and 'IAC-370', each represented by five seed lots of high germination (> 90%). Results were compared with germination tests carried out after storage under laboratory conditions. It was concluded that both procedures of the accelerated aging, at 43ºC/ 48h, were efficient to evaluate wheat seed vigor. The cold test, performed as the procedure developed for maize seeds, did not consistently detect differences in wheat seed vigor.
ABSTRACT PRIMING OF EGGPLANT SEEDSThe objective of this research was to study priming methods of eggplant seeds. Three seed lots of the Napoli cultivar were conditioned between paper towels )with 30, 60 and 90 mL of water at 15, 20 and 25 °C), and with PEG solutions (-0.5, -1.0, -1.5, and -2.5 MPa at 20 °C); following that, seeds were dried at 30 °C until water contents similar to original ones. The unconditioned (check) and conditioned seeds were evaluated in relation to water content, germination and vigor (speed of germination, accelerated aging, controlled deterioration and electrical conductivity). The most effective treatments (20 °C, with water or -0.5 MPa PEG) were again applied to other samples of same seeds which, together with the those of the check, were stored and evaluated through the same tests at 0, 60 and 120 days. Results showed that there is the possibility of conditioning eggplant seeds at 20 °C, between paper towels, with water or with solution of -0.5 MPa PEG 6000, followed by drying.
Ramularia blight, caused by Ramularia areola, is one of the most important diseases affecting cotton crop in Brazil. For its effective control, 5-9 fungicide applications on susceptible cultivars are necessary. The aim of the present study was to evaluate, in vitro and in vivo, the sporulation potential of R. areolaisolates from different Brazilian regions at distinct temperatures. Spore production was assessed in the laboratory and under green house conditions by using leaves from plants of eight cotton cultivars. The in vitro results indicated that the potential of spore production was dependent on temperature. Maximum sporulation of the fungus occurred at 17°C for isolates from São Paulo State and 23°C for isolates from Goiás and Mato Grosso States. In the in vivo study, there was a variation in spore production according to the cultivar and the isolate. Most isolates showed to be highly aggressive on cultivars FM966 LL and DELTAOPAL. The obtained results suggest a more rational use of fungicides and cultivars with decreased fungal sporulation and can form the basis for further studies of the pathogenic variability of this fungus in cotton crops in Brazil. This is the first report on the sporulation potential of Brazilian R. areola isolates.
