The silverleaf whitefly (SLW), Bemisia tabaci biotype B, is considered one of the most serious pests in cotton worldwide. Its control is based on the use of pesticides, which are well-known for their harmful effects on nontarget organisms and the environment. Here, we examined resistance of several cotton genotypes in terms of antixenosis and antibiosis against SLW. We also investigated the mechanisms of cotton genotypes involved in antixenosis against SLW by correlating with leaf trichome density and leaf colour parameters. In choice tests, we selected resistant cotton genotypes, Gossypium hirsutum palmeri, Aubum 56-7, G. hirsutum morrilli, Moc o, Nu-16 (B2 B3 B6)-78/658, Paymaster 53-816 and 'IAC 23', based on SLW oviposition and host preference. No-choice tests with these genotypes confirmed antixenosis effect on SLW; however, no antibiosis resistance was detected in terms of developmental period and adult emergence rate. We found SLW oviposition preference was positively correlated with trichome density in the abaxial leaf surface, while adult host preference was mostly explained by high levels of green intensity of adaxial surface. Nevertheless, both SLW oviposition and host preference were negatively correlated with the lightness level of adaxial leaf surface. Probably, the underlying mechanism of cotton resistance is based on more than just these two parameters, but our study will contribute to selecting resistant cotton genotypes and helps to understand the mechanisms involved in cotton resistance against SLW. To our best knowledge, this is the first work showing that cotton leaf colour parameters are related to resistance against SLW.

Ramularia blight, caused by Ramularia areola, is one of the most important diseases affecting cotton crop in Brazil. For its effective control, 5-9 fungicide applications on susceptible cultivars are necessary. The aim of the present study was to evaluate, in vitro and in vivo, the sporulation potential of R. areolaisolates from different Brazilian regions at distinct temperatures. Spore production was assessed in the laboratory and under green house conditions by using leaves from plants of eight cotton cultivars. The in vitro results indicated that the potential of spore production was dependent on temperature. Maximum sporulation of the fungus occurred at 17°C for isolates from São Paulo State and 23°C for isolates from Goiás and Mato Grosso States. In the in vivo study, there was a variation in spore production according to the cultivar and the isolate. Most isolates showed to be highly aggressive on cultivars FM966 LL and DELTAOPAL. The obtained results suggest a more rational use of fungicides and cultivars with decreased fungal sporulation and can form the basis for further studies of the pathogenic variability of this fungus in cotton crops in Brazil. This is the first report on the sporulation potential of Brazilian R. areola isolates.
COTTON IMPROVEMENT FOR MULTI-RESISTANCE TO DISEASES AND PESTS IN FIELD CONDITIONSA model of selection and cotton line tests for multi-resistance to diseases and pests is described and discussed. It was adopted by breeders of the Cotton Section of Instituto Agronômico at Campinas, State of São Paulo, Brazil, Fusarium and Verticilllium wilts, ramulosis {Colletotrichum gossypii var. cephalosporioides) bacterium {Xanthomonas campestris pv. malv ace arum), nematodes and stem-borer (Eutinobothrus brasiliensis) were considered. Relative resistance indices, appropriate to each adversity factor, and a multi-resistance index are suggested to evaluate the material's performance. Data obtained from 1981 to 1991 are presented. All the resistance indices increased during the period, except for ramulosis, that oscilated around 70% of the corresponding control's resistance. Correlation between the indices of the adversity factors varied on a casual way, around zero, rarely reaching the 5% level of significance. However, in the last years, negative correlations rouse between ramulosis on one side and Verticillium and bacterium on the other. Its importance and consequences are discussed. The average multi-resistance index increased steadily during the period, by 56.7% reaching the final value of 0.776. The value of 1.000 would mean that all the available genes for resistance were added in a same line.
