A nationwide cross-sectional survey was conducted among individuals aged ≥18 years across China, from May 2013 to July 2014. Participants underwent urinary tract ultrasonographic examinations, completed pre-designed and standardised questionnaires, and provided blood and urine samples for analysis. Kidney stones were defined as particles of ≥4 mm. Prevalence was defined as the proportion of participants with kidney stones and binary logistic regression was used to estimate the associated factors.
ResultsA total of 12 570 individuals (45.2% men) with a mean (sd, range) age of 48.8 (15.3, 18-96) years were selected and invited to participate in the study. In all, 9310 (40.7% men) participants completed the investigation, with a response rate of 74.1%. The prevalence of kidney stones was 6.4% [95% confidence interval (CI) 5.9, 6.9], and the age-and sex-adjusted prevalence was 5.8% (95% CI 5.3, 6.3; 6.5% in men and 5.1% in women). Binary logistic regression analysis showed that male gender, rural residency, age, family history of urinary stones, concurrent diabetes mellitus and hyperuricaemia, increased consumption of meat, and excessive sweating were all statistically significantly associated with a greater risk of kidney stones. By contrast, consumption of more tea, legumes, and fermented vinegar was statistically significantly associated with a lesser risk of kidney stone formation.
ConclusionKidney stones are common among Chinese adults, with about one in 17 adults affected currently. Some Chinese dietary habits may lower the risk of kidney stone formation.
The Chinese Diabetes Empowerment Process Scale has satisfactory validity and reliability for measuring the empowerment process of health professionals. Further studies are needed to test the applicability of the scale to other populations.
ObjectivesThis study aims to understand the caregiver burden experienced by the primary caregivers of patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), and to explore the factors influencing caregiver burden.DesignA cross-sectional survey design was used.SettingThis study was conducted with ALS inpatients and follow-up outpatients at the neurology department of a tertiary general hospital in Taiyuan, Shanxi, China and their caregivers.ParticipantsPatients with ALS and their caregivers (N=120 pairs) participated in a face-to-face interview.Primary and secondary outcome measuresPrimary outcome measures included the Zarit Burden Interview scores and personal/role burden scores. There were no secondary outcomes.ResultsMultiple linear and logistic regression analyses were performed to examine the factors influencing burden in ALS patient’s caregivers. Multiple linear regression showed that caregivers with higher Anxiety Index (AI) experienced greater personal (β=0.089, p<0.001), role (β=0.065, p<0.001) and overall (β=0.200, p<0.001) burden. Logistic regression analysis showed that AI (p=0.025; OR 1.351, 95% CI 1.038 to 1.759) and disease knowledge level (p=0.033; OR 0.305, 95% CI 0.107 to 0.593) are the influencing factors of ALS load classification.ConclusionsHigher AI scores were associated with greater caregiver burden. Caregiver burden of caregivers who had no knowledge of the patient’s disease was 0.305 times that of those who had good knowledge. The level of disease knowledge and AI score can serve as key predictors of caregiver burden in ALS.
Heterogeneity of cell phenotypes remains a barrier in progressing cell research and a challenge in conquering cancer-related drug resistance. Cell morphology, the most direct property of cell phenotype, evolves along the progression of the cell cycle; meanwhile, cell motility, the dynamic property of cell phenotype, also alters over the cell cycle. However, a quantifiable research understanding the relationship between the cell cycle and cell migration is missing. Herein, we coordinate the migratory behaviours of NIH 3T3 fibroblasts to their corresponding phases of the cell cycle, the G1, the S, and the G2 phases, and explain the relationship through the spatiotemporal arrangements between the Rho GTPases’ signals and cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitors, p21Cip1, and p27Kip1. Taken together, we demonstrate that both cell morphology and the dynamic subcellular behaviour are homogenous within each stage of the cell cycle phases but heterogenous between phases through quantitative cell analyses and an interactive molecular mechanism between the cell cycle and cell migration, posing potential implications in countering drug resistance.
It is known that the day-night shift-rotation has a negative impact on the immune system. The underlying mechanism remains to be further investigated. Probiotics have regulatory effects on immune functions. This study aims to investigate the role of probiotic ingestion in preventing the DEC205 + dendritic cell (decDC) dysfunction in day-night shift-engaging nurses. In this study, blood samples were collected from day-night shift-rotating nurses who took or did not take yogurt (containing C. Butyricum) during the night shift (NS). decDC functions were evaluated with pertinent immunological approaches. We observed that the immune tolerogenic functions and interleukin (IL)-10 expression were impaired in decDCs of nurses after NS. HDAC11 was detected in decDCs that was markedly up regulated after NS. The HDAC11 levels were negatively correlated with the immune tolerogenic functions in decDCs. Ingestion of probiotic-containing yogurt during NS efficiently suppressed Bmal1 and HDAC11 levels as well as up regulated the immune regulatory functions in decDCs. In conclusion, NS has a negative impact on decDC immune tolerogenic functions, which can be prevented by ingesting probiotics-containing yogurt during NS.
Pompe disease or glycogen storage disease type II is a rare autosomal recessive disorder caused by a deficiency of the lysosomal enzyme a-glucosidase. Although enzyme replacement therapy (ERT) with 2 weekly intervals following was considered an effective treatment for Pompe disease in 2006, few patients can afford to receive treatment in China because of the high cost. This study aimed to examine the standard management of enzyme replacement therapy for late-onset Pompe disease among patients over the age of 14 years from a nursing perspective in order to assess operating procedures. ERT injection fluid dispensing and infusion procedures using different methods were analyzed and compared in 3 patients with advanced Pompe disease for forming standard operation procedures. In addition, the impact of different methods on time consumption was analyzed by 1-way analysis of variance. There were significant differences in time consumption between different dispensing and infusion methods. The time of dispensing and infusing the injection fluids using the cooperative method was 15.97 minutes shorter than that using the conventional method (95% CI: 4.51–27.43, P = .012); the time using the modified method was 20.93 minutes shorter than that using the conventional method (95% CI: 9.47–32.39, P = .012); and there was no significant difference between the cooperative and modified methods (P = .431). Enzyme replacement therapy entails frequent treatment and strict nursing requirements related to the intravenous infusion process. In this context, a standard operating procedure can be used to control nursing times and labor costs effectively while ensuring a safe and effective infusion process.
