Purpose Corneal donation has not received adequate attention in Saudi Arabia, and donors are lacking. This study explores the underlying knowledge of, attitude regarding, and practice of corneal donation in Saudi Arabia, which will possibly help in designing healthcare policies and creating a national eye bank. Methods This observational cross-sectional study used a self-administered questionnaire and was administered to the residents of Saudi Arabia from August to December 2017. We surveyed 1292 random subjects who agreed to fill out the self-administered questionnaire. The sample included Saudi and non-Saudi residents across adult age groups from medical and non-medical professions. Results Of the 1292 respondents, only 4.3% believed that they had sufficient knowledge about corneal donation; 66.3% of the sample had not decided whether to donate their corneas after death; 40.2% stated that they would be more willing to donate if they had sufficient knowledge about corneal donation; and 46.1% of the population did not know where to apply to donate their corneas. Those who believed that they had sufficient information about corneal donation were significantly more likely to donate (p < 0.001) than those who believed they did not have enough information. Conclusion Increased awareness about corneal donation is required, as a higher level of awareness was associated with a higher willingness to donate corneas. Establishing healthcare policies and creating community campaigns is necessary to increase corneal donation awareness and willingness.
Juvenile xanthogranuloma (JXG) is an idiopathic granulomatous inflammatory condition that usually affects children. Intraocular involvement, especially bilateral, is rare in JXG. Most patients with ocular lesions are typically infants and usually present with hyphema, iridocyclitis, and secondary glaucoma. We report a case of a 3-month-old baby girl who presented to our emergency department with bilateral hyphema that started 3 weeks ago. She was medically free with no history of any recent trauma or preceding febrile illness. General physical examination showed a quiet baby with multiple hyperpigmented macules over the inner thigh and right upper arm, with one pinkish nodule over the occiput. She also had high intraocular pressures. A detailed ophthalmic assessment was done under general anesthesia. The nodular lesion was excised and sent for histopathological evaluation, which confirmed the diagnosis of JXG. Treatment of JXG cases present a challenge to ophthalmologist due to rebleeding and refractory glaucoma. Our case was admitted multiple times for rebleeding and refractory glaucoma and was treated with full antiglaucoma drops, steroid drops and peribulbar injection of steroid.
BackgroundStrabismus is a reversible condition that must be identified and treated during the critical period of childhood. Thus, this study aims to evaluate the degree of knowledge, attitude, and practice among parents of strabismic children in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. MethodTo this end, a cross-sectional study was conducted from August 2021 to November 2021 with a sample size of 424 parents of children with strabismus seeking ophthalmologic consultants in private and governmental ophthalmology clinics in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. A self-administered questionnaire was used to collect the data. The questionnaire contains knowledge-related questions about strabismus, beliefs-related questions, questions addressing the barriers parents face regarding strabismus in a child, and sources of information about cross-eye and its management. PURPOSE: There has been a recent increase in accidental retinal injuries due to the careless use of handheld laser devices. The scenarios under which these incidents occur suggest a lack of awareness of the sight-threatening hazards of some handheld lasers. This study aimed to assess knowledge of the population to plan awareness programs and establish protective health policies. METHODS: This observational cross-sectional study used a newly-developed, validated, and pilot-tested questionnaire to survey attendees of football matches in Saudi Arabia between September to October 2018. RESULTS: Five-hundred and sixty-nine attendees were surveyed, and 76% of respondents knew laser pointers were harmful and could damage the eye. However, 73% of respondents did not think that the blue laser was dangerous, indicating poor awareness regarding this particular laser. Only 38% knew which ocular structure is most commonly damaged, and 15.6% did not realize that brief exposure can cause vision loss. Females had better knowledge compared to males. Respondents between 25 and 40 years old, females, and married individuals had the highest levels of a positive attitude. There was no statistically significant difference in the mean knowledge score between those in the medical field and other fields ( P = 0.5). CONCLUSION: There is an inadequate knowledge of protective measures against handheld lasers. However, there's an overall positive attitude towards spreading awareness about this issue. Yet, targeted awareness campaigns are still needed in addition to more strict government laws to prevent importing or using high-powered handheld laser pointers.
Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada (VKH) disease is a multisystem autoimmune disease affecting melanocytecontaining tissues in the eyes, meninges, ear, and skin. As far as we are aware, this is a unique case report documenting the regeneration of the photoreceptor layer after bilateral complete loss of the photoreceptor layer in a child with VKH. We report a case of a 12-year-old male with no significant past medical history who presented during the chronic stage of incomplete VKH. He was found to have a complete loss of photoreceptor layer in both eyes during a work-up to confirm the aforementioned disease. Upon receiving his first pulse dose of 500 mg IV methylprednisolone as a treatment course, he developed severe steroidinduced hyperglycemia (random blood glucose of 17.6 mmol/L). Additionally, a brain MRI revealed pituitary gland changes compatible with diabetes insipidus, which is a combination that was mentioned once in the literature before. A review of the systems did not suggest any other systemic diseases. The patient's elevated blood sugar level was managed by a pediatrician, and it normalized. At his last visit, optical coherence tomography (OCT) showed hypertrophy/regeneration of the photoreceptor layer. This case report indicates that retinal photoreceptor layer regeneration can be sometimes observed with follow-up after the resolution of inflammation and uveitis.
