The prevalence of CD in a group of Brazilian pediatric DM 1 patients was at least 4.8%, a prevalence comparable to European and North American studies. The high prevalence of CD among DM 1 emphasizes the need for routine screening in all countries including Brazil.
The authors report on the incidence and clinical characteristics of neuroblastoma in southern Brazil. The aims of the study were to evaluate the age at diagnosis, tumor stage, MYCN status, and tumor histopathology, and to relate these factors to survival. All patients with neuroblastoma, 15 years old or younger (n = 125), admitted to the three major pediatric oncology hospitals in the state of Parana over a period of 11 years (between January 1990 and December 2000), were included in the analysis. All patients were followed for at least 5 years. In addition, a FISH evaluation for MYCN status was conducted in a subset of 34 tumors. Overall survival for tumor stages 1, 2, 3, and 4 was 100%, 72%, 59%, and 17%, respectively. Sixty-two percent (77/125) of all patients were older than 2 years; these represented 71% (57/80) of the patients with stage 4 disease. Children who presented with an unfavorable histopathology had a significantly worse prognosis (20% survival) than children with a favorable histopathology (67% survival). MYCN amplification was detected most commonly in stages 3 and 4 tumors (13/16). These data showed a delayed diagnosis of neuroblastoma in children in southern Brazil, and consequently survival was considerably lower in these patients.

ABSTRACT -Background -The medications most often prescribed and used chronically by patients with dyspeptic symptoms belong to the group of inhibitors of proton pump whose main representative is omeprazole, used clinically about 20 years. Recent studies have postulated the relationship between chronic use of this medication and macroscopic and microscopic proliferative changes in mucosal of gastric body, especially the fundic gland polyps. Aim -To analyze the frequency and type of gastric proliferative changes in chronic users of proton pump inhibitors proton and its association with age, dose, time of use, symptoms and Helicobacter pylori infection. Methods -A survey of prevalence was conducted in Digestive Endoscopy Service, Hospital de Clínicas, Federal University of Paraná, using questionnaire referring the use of these drugs and performed in subjects using this class of drugs during at least 12 months prior to the endoscopy. Gastric biopsies of fundus, body and antrum were performed in all patients. Polyps were removed when present for histopathological analysis. Research on Helicobacter pylori was done by urease test and histopathology.
RESUMO -RacionalResults -Twenty-two individuals were included of which six (27.3%) had proliferative changes of the mucosa. Of these, two (9.1%) had sporadic fundic polyps and four only microscopic proliferative change as cystic glandular formation. Statistic significant (p <0.05) association between age ≥ 60 years and these changes was found. There was no association between dose of use, time of use, symptoms and Helicobacter pylori infection. Conclusions -It was observed the existence of proliferative mucosa changes in individuals with chronic use of inhibitors of proton pump. In this group, the association between age and proliferative changes was significant.
The finding of a sebaceous carcinoma in a mature teratoma is rare in human pathology, with fewer than 10 cases currently reported in the literature. In this article, we report a case of sebaceous carcinoma in a mature teratoma of the ovary in a 59-year-old patient and discuss its histological findings.
Background: Nephroblastoma or Wilms tumor is the most frequent kidney cancer in children and accounts for 98% of kidney tumors in this age group. Despite favorable prognosis, a subgroup of these patients progresses to recurrence and death. The retinoic acid (RA) pathway plays a role in the chemoprevention and treatment of tumors due to its effects on cell differentiation and its antiproliferative, anti-oxidant, and pro-apoptotic activities. Reports describe abnormal cellular retinoic acid-binding protein 2 (CRABP2) expression in neoplasms and its correlation with prognostic factors and clinical and pathological characteristics. The aim of this study was to evaluate the immunohistochemical expression of retinoic acid receptor alpha (RARA) and CRABP2 in paraffin-embedded samples of nephroblastomas via semiquantitative and quantitative analyses and to correlate this expression with prognostic factors. Methods: Seventy-seven cases of nephroblastomas were selected from pediatric oncology services. The respective medical records and surgical specimens were reviewed. Three representative tumor samples and one non-tumor renal tissue sample were selected for the preparation of tissue microarrays (TMA). The Allred scoring system was used for semiquantitative immunohistochemical analyses, whereas a morphometric analysis of the stained area was employed for quantitative evaluation. The nonparametric Mann-Whitney test was used for comparisons between two groups, while the nonparametric Kruskal-Wallis test was used to compare three or more groups. Results: Immunopositivity for RARA and CRABP2 was observed in both the nucleus and cytoplasm. All histological components of the nephroblastoma (blastema, epithelium, and stroma) were positive for both markers. RARA, based on semiquantitative analyses, and CRABP2, bases on quantitative analyses, exhibited increased immunohistochemical expression in patients with metastasis, with p values of 0.0247 and 0.0128, respectively. These findings were similar to the results of the quantitative analysis of RARA expression, showing greater immunopositivity in tumor samples of patients subjected to pre-surgical chemotherapy. No significant correlation was found with the other variables studied, such as disease stage, anaplasia, risk group, histological type, nodal involvement, and clinical evolution. Conclusions: Semiquantitative and quantitative analyses of the markers RARA and CRABP2 indicate their potential as biomarkers for tumor progression and their participation in nephroblastoma tumorigenesis.
