We studied infestation rates and parasite-host associations between streblid flies and phyllostomid bats in an Atlantic Forest area of Rio de Janeiro state, southeastern Brazil. We captured 301 individuals from seven Phyllostomidae bat species. Out of that total, 69 bats had been parasitised by nine Streblidae species; the most frequent species were Trichobius joblingi and Trichobius tiptoni. The species Paraeuctenodes longipes, associated with Anoura geoffroyi, was the most frequent species. The highest mean intensity was observed for Paraeuctenodes longipes, associated with A. geoffroyi, and Paratrichobius longicrus associated with Artibeus lituratus, both ectoparasite species with a mean intensity of five individuals per bat. Trichobius joblingi exhibited the highest mean abundance, which was over three on its host species. Streblid richness in the study area was similar to the richness found in other studies carried out in the Atlantic Forest. We observed that streblid richness in this biome depends more on inherent characteristics of each physiognomy and on the host-species than on the sampling effort.
Several traits make stingless bees attractive to parasites of honey bee colonies. The small hive beetle (SHB) Aethina tumida, a honey bee colony scavenger/parasite native to sub-Saharan Africa, where is considered only a minor pest, is now present on almost all continents, including the Latin America region in South America. SHB has been recorded in Brazil since 2016 in Africanized honey bees and generaly the beetle does not seem cause negative impacts. European honey bees, on the other hand, suffer considerable damage when parasitized by SHB, suggesting a potential threat to other susceptible social bees. The present study reports the first occurrence of SHB in stingless bees in Brazil, and is an alert to authorities and stingless beekeepers to prevent infestations.
Abstract. Many organisms consume honeydew to meet their energy requirements. Some species of stingless bees also consume honeydew secreted by hemipterans. In this study we describe the ecological relationships among stingless bees, ants, and the whitefly [Aleurothrixus aepim (Goeldi)]. In order to do so, we made 30-min observations twice a day, carried out once a week for four weeks in the month of April 2009, in a cassava plantation (Manihot esculenta Crantz) in Valença in the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Our results show no necessary dependence between the bees and A. aepim. The presence of ants help protect whiteflies from their natural enemies, A. aepim may be benefited by this interaction and thereby increase their evolutionary success. Keywords: Stingless bees; competition; commensal; honeydew; ecological interactions.
Abstract. Particle depolarization ratio retrieved from lidar measurements are commonly used for aerosol typing studies, microphysical inversion, or mass concentration retrievals. The particle depolarization ratio is one of the primary parameters that can differentiate several major aerosol components, but only if the measurements are accurate enough. The uncertainties related to the retrieval of particle depolarization ratios are the main factor in determining the accuracy of the derived parameters in such studies. This paper presents different depolarization calibration procedures used to improve the quality of the depolarization data. The results illustrate a significant improvement of the depolarization lidar products for all the selected lidar stations that had implemented depolarization calibration procedures. The calibrated volume and particle depolarization profiles at 532 nm show values that fall within a range of values that are generally accepted in the literature.
Abstract. We record, for the first time, the presence of Aethina tumida Murray (Coleoptera: Nitidulidae) in the Rio de Janeiro state, in an apiary constituted by 36 honeybee hives Apis mellifera L. No eggs or larvae of A. tumida were found, only adults. Since this is the second Brazilian state to record an infestation of small hive beetles, the responsible institutions and beekeepers on each federative unit must stay aware of this in order to prevent or retard their spreading.
