Seasonal variation in direct and indirect measures of energy status was examined using estimates of glycogen, lipid and protein levels in a single cohort of male three-spined sticklebacks from an annual population collected each month over one complete year. Condition factor, somatic condition factor and hepatosomatic index (HSI) were calculated as indirect indices of energy status and the accuracy of these indirect measures as predictors of energy status was investigated. Results indicate that both condition factors were significant predictors of energy reserves (lipid, protein, glycogen and total energy), but that the proportion of variance accounted for was small. Both condition factors perform better as predictors of energy content per unit body weight. The HSI was a significant, but a weak predictor of total glycogen levels over the whole year. On a seasonal basis the relationship between HSI and energy reserves was highly variable. These indices are therefore poor predictors of energy reserves in male three-spined sticklebacks. Wet and dry weights of tissue were measured and concentrations of glycogen, lipid and protein were estimated for the liver, gonad and carcass of male sticklebacks from an annual population collected each month over one complete year. In young-of-the-year there is one period of rapid weight gain, in all three body regions (liver, carcass and gonads) but particularly of the carcass, in the autumn and a second in spring and early summer. This is accompanied by an increase in the water content of all three body regions. The gonadosomatic index also increases sharply in spring and early summer. Young sticklebacks accumulate lipid and glycogen slowly during the autumn and winter of their first year of life and more rapidly from late winter to early summer. Thus, the period of most rapid accumulation of these reserves coincides with the time when body weight and gonad maturation are also increasing sharply. Lipid and glycogen levels fall during the reproductive season in those males that breed? so that by July they are reduced to 43% and 37% (respectively) of their peak values in May. Levels of protein increase throughout the year as the fish grow, but in breeding males by July the concentration of protein in the carcass falls to 70% of pre-breeding levels. Breeding males therefore reach the end of the reproductive season with their total energy reserves severely reduced, and consequently they suffer a very high mortality. In contrast, adult males that fail to reproduce survive beyond the breeding season. They continue to gain weight and to accumulate lipid and glycogen from August to September, but these. energy reserves fall (to levels comparable to those of post-breeding fish) in December, when these fish probably die. These results demonstrate that in male sticklebacks, growth and gonad maturation can be sustained in parallel with the accumulation of energy reserves, which are subsequently extensively depleted as a result of reproductive activities.
a b s t r a c tThe native fish fauna commonly found in the drainage basins of rivers and reservoirs of Latin America, including those of the semi-arid Northeastern Brazil, are representatives of the Neotropical region. This work reports on the reproductive ecology of five commercially important and consumable native fish species, in relation to rainfall and hydrological variables of the semi-arid reservoirs in Brazil. Pluviometric precipitation, temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen and electrical conductivity of the water were registered, and maturation of fish gonads was assessed on a monthly basis. This region is characterized with short spells of rain interspersed with long dry season and rainfall seems to be the main environmental factor which modulates the timing of the spawning period of fish. Construction of reservoirs without adequate facilities for fish migration has an adverse impact on the migratory fish species which are of commercial and ecological importance to semi-arid Northeastern Brazil.
The reproductive ecology of the freshwater fish Cichla monoculus Spix, 1831 (Osteichthyes: Cichlidae) was investigated in the Campo Grande Reservoir, Northeast Brazil. Rainfall, temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen and electrical conductivity of the water were recorded monthly. Fish collected on a monthly basis were measured, weighted, dissected, sexed and the stage of maturation of the gonads were assessed by macro and microscopic means. The semi-arid study region has short spells of rain of 2-3 months duration interspersed with dry seasons. A positive correlation was observed between rainfall and air and water temperatures and conductivity of the water. The study population had an extended spawning season, with peak reproductive activity coinciding with low water temperatures. Males were longer and heavier than females on average and were larger at onset of sexual maturity. The size frequency distributions of the oocytes indicate that C. monoculus is a multiple spawner with an estimated batch fecundity of 3100. Condition factor showed an inverse relationship in relation to gonad size during maturation in both sexes and spent fish were in poor condition. In mature males, lipid stores in the post-occipital cephalic protuberance, a secondary sexual characteristic developed during the reproductive phase, which depleted in spent individuals. The success of this fish is attributed to its reproductive capacity and to the phenotypic plasticity that allows it to adapt to the harsh ecological conditions that prevail in the semi-arid region of Northeast Brazil.
– In a 6‐month study of male sticklebacks from a single cohort of an annual population, energy reserves (carbohydrate, lipid and protein) in the carcass and gonad were found to increase from December to May. Energy reserves in the liver increased from December to March before declining between March and April, a period of marked gonadal growth in this population. Examination at the individual level of the interrelationships among the various components of the energy store (corrected for differences in body size) identified overall body condition as a major component of variation and highlighted a negative relationship between energetic investment in gonadal tissue and energy reserves in various somatic compartments. Early in the season, relative gonadal weight was largely unrelated to somatic energy reserves, but from March onwards there was a negative correlation between these two variables. These data suggest that a significant flux of glycogen and lipid from the somatic to the gonadal tissue occurs in male sticklebacks in the period just prior to the breeding season, with the extent of gonadal growth varying between individuals and occurring at the expense of overall nutritional status.Note
a b s t r a c tThe ecology of phytoplankton reservoir communities plays a pivotal role in their management and in the development of inland fisheries in the water scarce semi-arid regions of Rio Grande do Norte State, Brazil. The hydrological conditions characterizing these reservoirs include infrequent rainfall and high evaporative loses. The phytoplankton assemblages in tropical climate are structured primarily on dry and wet cycles, not the annual temperature and light regime. The purpose of the current study was to investigate the ecological aspects of phytoplankton communities from three reservoirs during the period of July 2003-June 2004, which include atypical summer rainfall and reservoir overflow. The environmental data broadly divided into two categories, stress factors and disturbance factors. The stress factors deals with the impact of high particulate organic matter and low dissolved oxygen concentrations and disturbance factors, linked to water level fluctuation through flushing and reservoir drawdown, and these events are associated with the phytoplankton assemblages. Results indicated that the three distinct hydroperiods determined the structure of phytoplankton and chlorophyll levels and limited the presence and relative abundance of cyanobacterial species. Phytoplankton succession accompanied changes in clear and turbid water phase represented by the alternate dominance between diatoms and chlorophytes. Inundation and complete filling of reservoir stimulated ''s'' and ''r'' strategists species (o20 um) of unicellular and some colonial members of chlorophytes and cryptomonads in highly turbid water environment, and ''c'' strategist species in rest of the wet period following disturbance gradients. Statistical analysis elicited a significant relationship between particulate organic matter and relative abundance of smaller chlorophytes, which was deemed as stress factor. The flushing and reservoir drawdown indicate disturbance gradient and as a consequence high diversity. Furthermore, a substantial reduction in chlorophyll levels was registered in turbid water phase is related to the reduction of light penetration and re-suspension of sediments. Considering these results, it can be suggested that the well-managed reservoir drawdown can possibly maintain an environment free of eutrophication and cyanobacterial dominance.
This study investigated the morphohistology of the digestive tract and the mean intestinal coefficient of the damsel fish Stegastes fuscus captured from the tidal pools of Northeastern Brazil. The wall of the digestive tract of S. fuscus is composed of the tunica mucosa, tunica muscularis, and tunica serosa. The esophagus is short with sphincter and thick distensible wall with longitudinally folded mucosa. Mucous glands are predominant, and the muscular layer of the esophagus presented striated fibers all along its extension. The transition region close to the stomach shows plain and striated muscular fibers. Between the stomach and intestine, there are three pyloric caeca. The intestine is long and thin with four folds around the stomach. The anterior intestine presents folds similar to those of pyloric caeca. The estimated mean intestinal coefficient and characteristics of the digestive system of S. fuscus present morphological adequacy for both herbivorous and omnivorous feeding habits.
the neotropical red discus fish, Symphysodon discus, originates from the amazonian basin and has a discoid body. although this species is popularly used in aquaria and is exported as an ornamental fish, it has not been intensively studied. the purpose of this work was to study the morphological and histological aspects of the ovarian development in the red discus. Forty females of S. discus of varying body sizes and different stages of gonadal development were used in this study. the ovaries were weighed and examined macroscopically in order to observe the maturation stages. histological staining of hematoxilin-eosin was used for microscopic observations of the ovaries. macroscopic observations showed immature, maturing, mature and partially spent stages of ovarian development. microscopic examination of the ovaries revealed five stages and five phases of ovarian development. the ovaries of the mature females showed all the different phases of oocyte development, indicating the multiple spawning habit of this species.Keywords: Symphysodon discus, amazonian fish, cichlidae, gonadal development. RESUMO Desenvolvimento ovariano do Acará Disco Amazônico, Symphysodon discus Heckel (Osteichthyes: Cichlidae)O acará disco, Symphysodon discus, é um ciclídeo neotropical originário da bacia amazônica e seu corpo apresenta formato discoidal. embora esta espécie seja popularmente utilizada em aquariofilia e exportada como peixe ornamental, ainda é pouco estudada. este trabalho teve como objetivo estudar os aspectos morfológicos e histológicos do desenvolvimento ovariano do acará disco. para este estudo foram utilizadas 40 fêmeas de S. discus, de tamanhos diferentes, em várias fases de desenvolvimento gonadal. Os ovários foram pesados e examinados macroscopicamente para observar os estádios de maturação. para as observações microscópicas dos ovários foi utilizada coloração de hematoxilina-eosina. Os resultados da análise macroscópica apresentaram os estádios de desenvolvimento ovariano imaturo, em maturação, maduro e parcialmente esvaziado. a análise microscópica dos ovários revelou cinco estádios e cinco fases de desenvolvimento ovariano.
