Mixtures of forage grasses and legumes were established on 9.7 ha, using the following treatments: Brachiaria hybrida cv. Cayman,Brachiaria hybrida cv. Toledo, Panicum maximum cv. Mombaza, Brachiaria hybrida cv. Cayman + C. brasiliensis, Brachiaria hybridacv. Toledo + C. brasiliensis, Panicum maximum cv. Mombaza + C. brasiliensis. The following variables were evaluated: vigor, height ofthe plant, coverage, incidence of pests and diseases at the four-week mark and production of forage and dry matter were recorded at the six-week mark. Statistical differences were found for plant height, which evidenced which of the treatments behaved best in terms of growth. Non-combined treatments were found to perform best for the production of dry matter variable. C. brasiliensis contributes to the growth of the combined grasses during the first four weeks of establishment, but after this time the legume begins to compete for space and light, affecting the development of the other forage species.

Agronomic, nutritional, and environmental aspects are integrated to promote sustainable tropical grassland production. Biological nitrification inhibition (BNI) is a plant-based strategy to improve nitrogen use efficiency by grasses in which they suppress the pace of soil nitrification via exudation of inhibitory compounds. To evaluate the effect of BNI on the productive performance of Megathyrsus maximus under field conditions, we evaluated a collection of 27 germplasm accessions and commercial cultivars of the forage grass in the dry tropics of Colombia. We measured plant yield dry matter, nutrition quality parameters, and nitrification rates of soil at 22 months after pasture establishment. Our results highlighted germplasm accessions of superior agronomic performance (for dry matter production and nutrition quality) and high capacity to decrease nitrification. Although no relation was observed between agronomic aspects, nutritional aspects, and nitrification rates, we conclude that there is no agronomic or nutritional penalty on environmentally friendly grasses, and BNI could be adopted as a target trait in plant breeding programs toward the development of eco-efficient forages and contribute to the sustainable intensification of livestock systems.

The Ejido River is an ecosystem of ecological and social importance which flows through much of the city of Popayán becoming an environmental axis, but human activities have led to a deterioration of this ecosystem. In order to establish indicators for this water resource, the aquatic community was evaluated (Macroinvertebrates and periphyton), performing sampling (4) in four points distributed over the urban area of the city, where there were variations of the physico-chemical characteristics of water in relation to the biota present. According to the score awarded by the BMWP, 4 sampling points are classified in class V (≤ 15) as being heavily polluted waters. 18 genera of algae were identified, the most frequent were: Anabaena, Chlamydomona, Euglenophyta, Oscillatoria, Trachelomona, Merismopedia and Tabellaria, which is an indicator of eutrophication and high content of organic matter; a condition due to dumping from the life stock slaughter center and the lack of a sewerage system. Con el fin de establecer indicadores de este recurso hídrico, se evaluó la comunidad acuática (Macroinvertebrados y Perifiton); realizándose muestreos (4), en cuatro puntos distribuidos sobre la zona urbana de la ciudad, donde se registraron las variaciones de las características fisicoquímicas del agua en relación con la biota presente. De acuerdo a la puntuación otorgada por el BMWP, los 4 puntos de muestreo se catalogan en clase V (≤ 15) siendo aguas fuertemente contaminadas. Recibido el 26 de abril de 2013 y aprobado el 16 de junio de 2013 RESUMENEl cultivo de los hongos del género Pleurotus sp. es de importancia debido a que producen proteínas de alta calidad sobre un sustrato que consiste en materiales de desecho de carácter lignocelulósico. El objetivo fue evaluar el uso de residuos agrícolas: cáscara de papa, plátano y bagazo de caña, como una alternativa proteica en el corregimiento de Llacuanas municipio de Almaguer (Cauca). El diseño experimental fue completamente al azar, con cuatro tratamientos y cinco repeticiones por tratamiento, donde se tuvieron en cuenta variables físicas (color y textura); y de producción (Colonización, peso y diámetro). El análisis de varianza mostro diferencias estadísticas significativas para peso y diámetro; y la prueba post hoc de Duncan, evidenció que los mejores tratamientos fueron 1 y 2 (Bagazo de caña, cascara de plátano, salvado de maíz y cal agrícola), sustratos constituidos por carbohidratos estructurales que favorecen el desarrollo del hongo.
