Agronomic response of forage mixtures in a silvopastoral system of the Colombian dry tropic

Abstract: Mixtures of forage grasses and legumes were established on 9.7 ha, using the following treatments: Brachiaria hybrida cv. Cayman,Brachiaria hybrida cv. Toledo, Panicum maximum cv. Mombaza, Brachiaria hybrida cv. Cayman + C. brasiliensis, Brachiaria hybridacv. Toledo + C. brasiliensis, Panicum maximum cv. Mombaza + C. brasiliensis. The following variables were evaluated: vigor, height ofthe plant, coverage, incidence of pests and diseases at the four-week mark and production of forage and dry matter were record… Show more

“…In areas under edaphoclimatic conditions of the Colombian dry tropics, the response in terms of production is adequate during challenging precipitation periods. Also, it is grass with short recovery periods, tolerance to shade, moderate drought periods, and short ooding periods (Morales-Velasco, et al, 2016Vivas-Quila et al, 2015 and adequate response in association with legume (Matínez-Mamian et al, 2020). In addition, nutritional composition of M. maximus in terms of protein content, bers, and digestibility has a wide range of values.…”

“…These grasses were the first products of the selection and improvement of forage grasses conducted by the International Center for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT) in Colombia and are of importance for regions such as Sub-Saharan Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean (Rao et al, 2015;Maass et al, 2015). Studies comparing these forages in association with legumes in large-scale trials are few (Pérez-López and Afanador-Téllez, 2017;Martínez-Mamian et al, 2020). Therefore, it is necessary to continue with the evaluation of these associations in a larger area and coverage; also, from their establishment to evaluate the feasibility of implementation in efficient production systems that would offer solutions to producers in critical times as an option to improve and enhance livestock farming.…”

“…Under edaphoclimatic conditions of the Colombian dry tropical forest, the response in terms of production is adequate during low-precipitation periods. Also, this grass has short recovery periods, tolerance of shade and moderate drought periods, tolerance of short flooding periods (Morales-Velasco et al, 2016;Matínez-Mamian et al, 2020), and an adequate response in association with forage legumes (Matínez-Mamian et al, 2020) and with silvopastoral systems (Barragán-Hernández and Cajas-Girón, 2019). This grass is promising for environmental management of cattle because of its potential for biological nitrification inhibition (IBN), (Carvajal-Tapia et al, 2021) and is outstanding for its nutritive value, perenniality, and adaptive potential, and for showing diversity among cultivars in terms of yield, forage quality, and response to nutrient fertilization (Benabderrahim and Elfalleh, 2021).…”
