OBJECTIVE:To estimate the mean number of missing teeth, lack of functional dentition and total tooth loss (edentulism) among adolescents, adults and the elderly in Brazil, comparing the results with those of 2003. METHODS:Data from 5,445 adolescents aged 15-19, 9,779 adults aged 35-44 and 7,619 elderly individuals aged 65-74, participants in the Brazilian Oral Health Survey (SBBrasil) 2010, were analyzed. The mean missing teeth, proportion of lack of functional dentition (< 21 natural teeth) and proportion of edentulism (total tooth loss) were estimated for each age group, each state Capital and each macro region. Multivariable logistic regression (tooth loss) and Poisson (absence of functional dentition and edentulism) analyses were performed in order to identify socioeconomic factors and demographic characteristics associated with each outcome. RESULTS:The prevalence of tooth loss among adolescents was 17.4% (38.9% in 2002-03) ranging from 8.1% among those earning higher income to almost 30% among those with less schooling. Among adolescents, females, those with black or brown skin and those with the lowest levels of income and schooling had a higher prevalence of tooth loss. Lack of functional dentition affected nearly ¼ of adults, it was higher among women, among those with black and brown skin and among those with the lowest levels of income and schooling. Mean missing teeth in adults decreased from 13.5 in 2002-03 to 7.4 in 2010. More than half of elderly is edentulous (similar to the 2002-03 fi ndings); higher prevalence of edentulism was found among women and those with the lowest levels of income and schooling. Among adolescents the mean missing teeth ranged from 0.1 (in Curitiba, South Brazil and Vitória, Southeast Brazil) to 1.2 (in the North countryside). Among adults the lowest mean missing teeth was found in Vitória (4.2) and the highest in Rio Branco, North Brazil (13.6). CONCLUSIONS:A remarkable reduction in tooth loss among adolescents and adults was identifi ed between 2010 and 2003. Among the elderly, tooth loss fi gure remained the same. In spite of important achievements in tooth loss fi gures, social and regional inequalities persist.

OBJECTIVE:To estimate the prevalence and severity of dental caries in Brazilian children and the association with individual and contextual factors. METHODS:Data were taken from the Brazilian Oral Health Survey (SBBrasil 2010) a sample of 7,247 12-year-olds. The data were collected using clinical examinations and interviews. The dependent variables were the prevalence of dental caries (decayed, missing and fi lled teeth [DMFT] ≥ 1 and DMFT ≥ 4). Bivariate (Rao Scott test) and multivariate (Poisson regression) analyses were carried out. The individual variables were sociodemographic variables, periodontal health and reporting discomfort while brushing. Contextual factors were the presence of water fl uoridation, the percentage of residences connected to the water supply and median income of the municipality. RESULTS:The prevalence of DMFT ≥ 1 was 56.0%. Mean DMFT was 2.04 (95%CI 1.76;2.31) and 22.2% of children had DMFT ≥ 4. Caries experience was signifi cantly more common in children with black, brown or yellow skin; in low-income families; in children with dental calculus or bleeding gums and in those who reported discomfort while brushing. Living in towns with fl uoridated tap water, with low coverage of water supply and with low median income were contextual factors associated with the disease. CONCLUSIONS:The prevalence of dental caries in Brazilian 12-year-olds was low, according to World Health Organization criteria. There were signifi cant geographical and socioeconomic inequalities in levels of the disease.

OBJETIVO: conhecer a condição de saúde bucal de idosos institucionalizados na cidade de Goiânia-GO. MÉTODO: estudo transversal utilizando a metodologia do Projeto SB-2000, Brasil do Ministério da Saúde. A amostra foi constituída de todos os indivíduos com idade igual ou maior que 60 anos (n=289) residentes nas instituições públicas e filantrópicas de longa permanência da cidade de Goiânia-GO (n=10) em 2003. As condições estudadas foram cárie, uso e necessidade de prótese, doença periodontal e alterações de tecido mole. RESULTADOS: A faixa etária variou de 60 a 103 anos. As prevalências de cárie e edentulismo foram 100% e 69,20%, respectivamente. O CPOD médio foi 30,17, havendo predomínio do componente extraído. Quase a metade (49,48%) usava e 80,28% necessitavam de alguma prótese. O tipo de prótese mais comum foi a total: 45,33% dos examinados usavam este tipo de prótese na arcada superior e 24,57% na inferior; enquanto 59,17% e 51,21% necessitavam na arcada superior e inferior, respectivamente. De acordo com o Índice Periodontal Comunitário (CPI), apenas 3 (3,37%) dos idosos apresentaram todos os sextantes sadios. A pior condição mais freqüente foi o cálculo, observado em 55,06% dos indivíduos e 29,02% dos sextantes. Quanto ao Índice de Perda de Inserção Periodontal (PIP), houve predomínio das perdas de 0 a 3mm como pior condição em 37,08% dos indivíduos e 24,04% dos sextantes. Alterações de tecido mole foram encontradas em 13,49% dos indivíduos. CONCLUSÃO: A situação de saúde bucal dos idosos institucionalizados em Goiânia é precária, especialmente devido à alta prevalência de cárie e edentulismo.

The type of school was associated with the oral health condition of the children in this sample. Investments in actions and services to mitigate this inequality and its effects should be made as part of the policies to promote oral health.

The aim of this study was to investigate the association between dental caries index among 12-year-old schoolchildren and individual and contextual factors related to the schools in the city of Goiânia, Goiás, Brazil. A cross-sectional study was carried out with 2,075 schoolchildren using the 2010 National Survey of Oral Health methodology. The dependent variable was the decayed, missing, and filled teeth (DMFT) index and the independent variables were individual (sex, race, and maternal education) and contextual ones (type of school, health district, and the presence of oral programs). Multilevel analysis and log-linear negative binominal regression were performed, considering the complex sampling design. Mean DMFT index was 1.51. Female students, whose mothers had lower schooling, those attending public schools, located in districts with the worst socioeconomic indicators, and covered by the Family Health Strategy had higher caries levels. The dental caries index was low and associated with the schoolchildren sociodemographic characteristics and factors related to the schools, showing inequalities in distribution.

O instrumento foi aplicado no município de Marília (SP), em três edifícios residenciais localizados na região central cidade. The objective of this paper is to show the results of a research that evaluate the degree of satisfaction of elderly residents in relation to their dwelling. The instrument was applied in the city of Marília (SP), in three residential buildings located in the central city. 1 Introdução Segundo Mendes et al. [2005] envelhecer é um processo natural que caracteriza uma etapa da vida do homem. Ele se dá por mudanças físicas, psicológicas e sociais que acometem de forma particular cada indivíduo com sobrevida prolongada. Os idosos, com o avanço da idade, sofrem com algumas modificações físicas que dificultam sua capacidade motora. Fatores como a acuidade visual que tende a piorar, chegando a menos de 50% da capacidade aos 80 anos de idade. O processo de envelhecimento também aumenta a dificuldade para distinguir as cores violeta, azul e verde em função do amarelamento do cristalino. Há um enrijecimento das articulações, resultando em uma perda da força física nas mãos, braços e pernas [TILLEY, 2005 apud BESTETTI, 2006].

Oral health care of the elderly was perceived as a burden by caregivers, and did not follow a standard protocol. Caregivers' knowledge and perceptions reinforce the need for education and training in oral health issues.
