Our study considers twelve graduating high school students' practical and theoretical understandings of the concept of particles. The psychology of representations (Moscovici, 1961, 1984) suggests how scientific knowledge can be rendered digestible, and helps to explain the marked tendency in student discourse to give to scientific phenomena and concepts the same status accorded to ordinary material objects.
