A field experiment was conducted during the rabi seasons of 2010 to 2013 to find out the optimum time of sowing and plant spacing for broccoli (var. KTS-1) seed production. Seedlings raised by sowing on four different dates viz. 10 th October, 30 th October, 20 th November and 10 th December were transplanted at two spacing viz. 45 cm x 45 cm and 60 cm x 45 cm. Yield and yield attributing characters were significantly influenced by the treatments. Sowing on 10 th October produced the highest head yield (137.81q/ha) while 10 December sowing produced the lowest head yield (6.75 q/ha) of broccoli. Closer spacing (45 cm x 45 cm) gave significantly higher head yield (88.28 q/ha) than planting at 60 cm x 45 cm distance. The highest seed yield (177 kg/ha) was obtained on planting 10 October sown seedlings at 45 cm x 45 cm distance and was the most remunerative (B: C ratio of 6.44) among all the treatment combinations. Plants from delayed sowing of 20 th November and 10 th December failed to produce viable seeds under agro-climatic condition of Assam.
Capsicum species are not only cultivated as vegetable and condiment crop but are also incorporated into a number of medicinal preparations in the ancient literature around the world. 'Naga chilli' or 'Bhoot Jolokia' (Capsicum chinense Jacq.) is a chilli variety indigenous to the northeast region of India and has been recognized as one of the hottest chilli in the world. It has also been used conventionally in treating various human ailments since time immemorial by the indigenous people of the northeast India. Capsaicin and dihydrocapsaicin are the two major members of the so-called capsaicinoid family, which includes other minor analogues, and usually account for at least 90 % of the pungency trait in chilli fruits. In the present study, determination of Capsaicinoid content of Bhoot Jolokia (Capsicum chinense Jacq.) under different sowing time and spacing was done. In the Scoville Organoleptic test, the highest Scoville Heat Unit (SHU) value was found in September 15 sowing fruits and the lowest in the February 15 sowing fruits. Fruit produced from spacing 105 cm× 105 cm showed highest Scoville Heat Unit. In High Performance Liquid Chromatography analysis, highest amount of capsaicinoid was also found in September 15 sowing while fruits produced from spacing 105 cm×105 cm showed highest amount of capsaicinoid. Identification of Nordihydrocapsaicin, Capsaicin and Dihydrocapsaicin was done by comparing the retention time of sample with those of standard.
Five hybrid brinjal varieties viz., Ketan, Vijay Kiron, Utkal Green, NV2035 Sarpan Bharata and two local cultivars viz., JC-1, Longai were evaluated at Horticultural Research Station, Kahikuchi, Guwahati as late rabi crop during 2014-16. Significant variation in plant growth parameters and fruit yield as well as on bacterial wilt incidence (Ralstonia solanacearum) were shown by all the varieties.Utkal Green recorded the highest per plant fruit yield (2.32 kg/plant) leading to the maximum total marketable yield (469.66 q/ha) and longer active fruiting duration (43.70 days).It also showed resistant reaction to bacterial wilt, recording only 12.44 per cent wilt incidence as compared to other varieties where it was in the range of 34.44 to 62.22 % at 55 days after transplanting. Although, Ketan and Vijay Kiron recorded moderately higher per plant fruit yield of 1.52 and 1.47 kg/plant,respectively but their total marketable fruit production reduced substantially due to high incidence of bacterial wilt (62.22 and 57.78%, respectively).The local cultivars, JC-1 and Longai exhibited moderately resistant reaction to bacterial wilt which registered 40.00 and 34.44 % , respectively.
