This research was aimed to find out ICT media are preferred by high school students in South Bengkulu in learning reading and to describe the reading materials should be used with ICT media. The research design was mixed method quantitative and qualitative with the subjects of this research were 302 high school students and 11 English teachers in South Bengkulu. The instruments of this research were questionairre and open-ended interview. The findings of the research revealed that (1) online ICT media was prefered by high school students in South Bengkulu in learning reading and (2) kinds of text became the reading material that should be used with ICT media. To suggest, a broader field test still needed to be done to achieve a better result and other researchers who are interested in the incorporation of ICT in learning teaching are suggested to conduct further investigation which possibly deals with other language skills.
This study aims to investigate the rhetorical structure of move and step of short lecture by famous applied linguist Jack C. Richards posted on YouTube. The data of this study were 22 video-transcripts of a short lecture of Jack C Richards. The results: (1) three moves of rhetorical structure such as M1 – Introduction, M2 – Content of Short Lecture, and M3 – Conclusion. They are 100% occurred in all of the data analyzed as obligatory category. (2) the most often found steps in the short lectures that occurred 100% and classified as obligatory category, such as M2SB – Argumentation of the short lecture and M3SA – Summarizing the points and the steps with 60-99% percentage of occurrences as classified as conventional category, namely are M1SE – Announcing topic of oral presentation, M1SA – Greeting the Audience, M2SC – Illustration of short lecture, and M2SA – Description of short lecture. The new proposed model of spoken genre analysis adapted from Ali and Singh (2019), the Sermon model by Cheong cited in Safnil (2010) and Seliman (1996) for identifying the rhetorical structure of short lecture is effective enough to capture the possible rhetorical moves and steps in a whole text of short lecture by famous applied linguist posted in YouTube.
This study investigates the argument pattern in research articles by postgraduate students of English and Education University Bengkulu, based on Toulmin’s Theory (1958). This study analyzed the argument pattern, and reveal the type of data used by the student to support the claim in their argument contains in introduction section and discussion section of Journal Applied Lingusitic and Literature (JOALL) 2016. The data analysis result show that (a) the common argument pattern employed for arguments in introduction section of Research Article published in JOALL is Semi-complete pattern; (b) in discussion section the authors also commonly employ Semi-complete pattern. In addition (c) there are five types of data used by the authors to ground their arguments they are, Facts, Statistics, Example, Expert Opinion, and A Note on Visual. It can be conclude that the Research Article author published in JOALL have a good argumentative text based on Toulmin’s theory.
This research aims to see the strengths and weaknesses, differences and similarities of SPME standards, and build a hypothetical integration of quality assurance systems. This research type is evaluative research with a qualitative approach. The instrument is an interview guide, observation guide, and documentation. The data analysis used is a SWOT analysis, Mind Mapping, and CIPP. The results are the weaknesses are seen from multiple assignments, different assessment indicators, teamwork, implementation of the MOU has not been optimal, and the assessment period and data are not yet integrated. The threats are inconsistent regulations, different standards, and global competition. This is the first study that evaluated five accreditation quality assurance systems, ISO 9001: 2015, PDDikti, SAKIP, and ZI. The formulation of a hypothetical model provides SPMI data for the requirement of the SPME. The recommendation from this study is to coordinate the quality assurance center to synchronize the data and integrate data audit instruments in a quality assurance application.
