In this paper boundary element methods (BEM) are mated with near-field acoustical holography (NAH) in order to determine the normal velocity over a large area of a fuselage of a turboprop airplane from a measurement of the pressure (hologram) on a concentric surface in the interior of the aircraft. This work represents the first time NAH has been applied in situ, in-flight. The normal fuselage velocity was successfully reconstructed at the blade passage frequency (BPF) of the propeller and its first two harmonics. This reconstructed velocity reveals structure-borne and airborne sound-transmission paths from the engine to the interior space.

Deformation behavior of cobalt in the fcc phase was studied over a wide range of strain rates (0.001 to 1 s -1 ) and temperatures (600°C to 950°C). At the lower temperatures and higher strain rates, a single peak in flow stress followed by softening to steady state was observed, whereas at higher temperatures and lower strain rates, an oscillatory flow stress behavior finally converging to a steady state was observed. Both these represent typical flow stress responses during dynamic recrystallization (DRX). The critical condition for the initiation of DRX was determined by the inflection point in the work-hardening vs stress plot. This critical condition in terms of the work done was found to increase with temperature-compensated strain rate. Electron backscattered diffraction (EBSD) revealed that, on quenching after deformation, a certain fraction of the fcc phase was always retained, the extent of retention being higher for smaller grain sizes. Misorientation measurements across boundaries revealed a significant amount of twins in the retained fcc phase. The grain average misorientation (GAM), signifying the misorientation within grains, was found to be inversely related to the twin boundary fractions in the fcc phase.

SUMMARYAn advanced formulation of the boundary element method has been developed for inelastic analysis based on an initial stress approach. The iterative solution algorithm makes use of an accelerated initial stress approach in which the past history of initial stresses are used to obtain an initial estimate for the current increment. In the present analysis the geometry and functions are represented by higher order (quadratic) shape functions to model complex geometries and rapid functional variations accurately. The methods of numerical integration of the kernels, particularly the singular type, are substantially improved by devising suitable automatic sub-segmentation routines that incorporate the recent developments in mapping procedures. The formulations have been implemented for two-dimensional plane stress, plane strain and three-dimensional elasto-plasticity problems.
