Interior near-field acoustical holography in flight

Abstract: In this paper boundary element methods (BEM) are mated with near-field acoustical holography (NAH) in order to determine the normal velocity over a large area of a fuselage of a turboprop airplane from a measurement of the pressure (hologram) on a concentric surface in the interior of the aircraft. This work represents the first time NAH has been applied in situ, in-flight. The normal fuselage velocity was successfully reconstructed at the blade passage frequency (BPF) of the propeller and its first two harmon… Show more

“…The near-field acoustic holography (NAH) is the most representative technique in this context (e.g. [7][8][9]). On the other hand, scarce work in this context has been done for the in situ measurement of acoustic impedance.…”

“…15 In 2000, the noise source was located in cabin using BEM near field acoustic holography by Williams. 16 In 2003, sound field separation technique was researched to extend the application range using double plane array to obtain sound pressure by Yu Fei. 17,18 In 2006, the method of extended SONAH was used to locate the noise source in vehicle cabin by Hald.…”

“…Until recently, the use of array measurement techniques inside of aircraft has mainly been limited to strongly correlated or easily referenced sources such as propeller driven aircraft. 1 The difficulties in using array techniques inside of jet aircraft can be attributed to channel count, source type, the interior acoustic field, and area of coverage.…”
