Research on NO in plants has achieved huge attention in recent years mainly due to its function in plant growth and development under biotic and abiotic stresses. In the present study, we investigated Cd induced NO generation and its relationship to ROS and antioxidant regulation in Brassica juncea. Cd accumulated rapidly in roots and caused oxidative stress as indicated by increased level of lipid peroxidation and H2O2 thus, inhibiting the overall plant growth. It significantly decreased the root length, leaf water content and photosynthetic pigments. A rapid induction in intracellular NO was observed at initial exposures and low concentrations of Cd. A 2.74-fold increase in intracellular NO was recorded in roots treated with 25 μM Cd than control. NO effects on Malondialdehyde (MDA) content and on antioxidant system was investigated by using sodium nitroprusside (SNP), a NO donor and a scavenger, [2-(4-carboxy-2-phenyl)-4,4,5,5-tetramethylinidazoline-1-oxyl-3-oxide] (cPTIO). Roots pretreated with 5 mM SNP for 6 h when exposed to 25 μM Cd for 24 h reduced the level of proline, non-protein thiols, SOD, APX and CAT in comparison to only Cd treatments. However, this effect was almost blocked by 100 μM cPTIO pretreatment to roots for 1 h. This ameliorating effect of NO was specific because cPTIO completely reversed the effect in the presence of Cd. Thus, the present study report that NO strongly counteracts Cd induced ROS mediated cytotoxicity in B. juncea by controlling antioxidant metabolism as the related studies are not well reported in this species.
Obesity is a highly prevalent disease with multiple implications for cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. The traditional view of obesity is that excessive adipose tissue represents a passive storage depot of excess energy. However, obesity has been demonstrated to be a highly active endocrine organ with multiple metabolic pathways that interact with classic cardiac risk factors. The role of inflammation in atherosclerosis has been clarified by the ready availability of a variety of markers, including C-reactive protein, adiponectin, tumor necrosis factor-alpha, hemostatic markers, resistin, and a variety of emerging markers such as interleukins and adhesion molecules. Adipose tissue has been demonstrated to be the site of synthesis of a variety of proteins that are intimately involved in the regulation of inflammation. The concept that obesity represents an inflammatory state has gained credence over the past decade and has provided insights into the mechanisms of atherosclerosis and risk factor interaction.
The lowering of serotonin for a period following MDMA use could account for the increases in both self-rated and objective measures of aggression previously found in ecstasy users several days after taking the drug. There is some evidence of gender differences in the acute, sub-acute and long-term effects of MDMA use, and given that gender differences have been found in aggression, it is possible that men may experience more aggression mid-week than women. The aim of this study was to attempt to replicate findings showing increased bias towards aggressive material in ecstasy users several days after using the drug. In addition, to investigate possible gender differences in mid-week aggression. A total of 46 participants were tested: 19 ecstasy users and 27 controls were compared on the night of drug use and 4 days later. On day 4, a task designed to tap cognitive bias toward material with aggressive content was administered. Participants were required to process sentences that could be interpreted as either aggressive or neutral and subsequently remember them in a recognition test. This data set was then combined with the data from Curran et al.'s (2004) study that employed exactly the same procedure. Thus, the data from 107 participants was analysed to investigate gender differences. Ecstasy users recognized more aggressive sentences than controls and tended to react slower to neutral sentences than controls. Ecstasy users also rated themselves as being more aggressive and depressed than controls on day 4. No gender differences were found on any measure of aggression in the combined data set. Both male and female ecstasy users show a bias toward interpretation of ambiguous material in an aggressive manner when compared to controls 4 days after ecstasy use.
Summary. Hydatid fluids from sheep, goat, pig and man, after resolution by sodium dodecyl sulphate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis under reducing conditions, revealed at least 1 5 discrete polypeptide bands of 8-1 16 Kda. By ELISA, sera from all 20 cases of hydatidosis showed anti-hydatid antibody, but so did 11 (73%) of 15 sera samples from cysticercosis patients, eight (67%) of 12 sera from patients with other parasitic infections (amoebic liver abscess or hymenolepiasis) and one (4%) of 25 sera from healthy controls. Antibody to cysticercus antigen was found in 14 (93%) of 15 sera from cysticercosis patients, 17 (85%) of 20 sera from hydatid patients, six (50%) of 12 sera from patients with other parasitic infections and one (4%) of 25 sera from healthy controls. Sera from 17 (85%) of 20 hydatid patients, 11 (73%) of 15 cysticercosis patients and five (42%) of 12 patients with other parasitic infections had antibodies to both hydatid and cysticercus antigens. Sera from 20 surgically confirmed cases of hydatidosis reacted with 12 polypeptides of 8-116 Kda in Western immunoblot with hydatid antigens. Polypeptides of 16,24, 38,45 and 58 Kda were recognised by all hydatidosis sera but also by many sera from patients with other infections. However, polypeptides of 8 and 116 Kda were recognised by all hydatidosis sera but not by any sera from patients with cysticercosis, other parasitic infections or viral hepatitis, or from healthy controls. Thus, recognition of 8-and 116-Kda hydatid antigens by a patient's serum appears to be a specific test confirming a clinical diagnosis in an individual case of hydat idosis.
